Grand Theft Auto: Crime America series. History of the Grand Theft Auto series Who invented GTA

Grand Theft auto

The cult phenomenon "Grand Theft Auto" hit the gaming horizon in October 1997. No company other than English DMA Design, didn’t think of crossing a typical top-down arcade game with a car theft simulator. The player had to conquer three fictional cities in the United States, stealing cars, carrying out orders from mafia bosses, collecting bonuses, escaping from the police and earning a million dollars.

A separate achievement of the game was a magnificent soundtrack, which combined almost all types of modern Western pop music: hip-hop, house, funk, techno, industrial, country, metal and rock. The melodies were mixed in the style of radio broadcasting and "tied" to different types of cars, so, sitting in some Jugular, we heard a jovial techno-trance, and plopping down on the seat of a pickup, involuntarily spat from the annoying songs of the rural outskirts.

Tasks were given by phone or by means of a pager. By agreeing to complete the mission, the player had to meet a strictly defined time and at the same time try not to become a victim of a stray bullet, an accident, an explosion and police inspectors. If successful, a generous reward awaited him. In addition, money was credited for every stolen car and every pedestrian killed. A separate mini-game was the entertainment "kill the Hare Krishnas", who wandered in single file in crowded places, literally begging to wind them on wheels.

By the way, the prototypes of cities Gta quite real places have become: Liberty City is, of course, New York; San andreas with its bridge resembling the Golden Gate, San Francisco; finally, Vice City - Miami (fans of the TV series Miami Vice, we suppose, do not need to explain where the third city has such a name).

Grand Theft Auto supported a collective game for four users and the newfangled 3Dfx Voodoo graphics accelerators for those times.

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969

Take the original GTA and move it in time and space. London, 1969, parodies of spy movies, the Tower, Big Ben, cars with the colors of the British flag and music in the spirit of the 70s (yuck!) - this is what awaited fans of the game.

Grand theft auto 2

A sequel that has become a disappointment for many fans of the series. Instead of full 3D, a thoroughly trimmed engine from the first part awaited them, blessed with colored lighting, simulation of the "day-night" cycle and bright explosions. Three cities turned into one, divided into 3 districts - a business district, "sleeping" outskirts and an industrial zone, each of which had its own gang. The evil corporation Zaibatsu ruled all the disgrace (let's do without transliteration, okay?), And among the small bipods there were Yakuza, Loonies, Russians (at least somewhere we were recognized), Rednecks, SRS and Hare Krishna. We still carried out the orders of the mafia bosses, but in addition to money we also earned respect points, reflecting the degree of attitude of a particular group. It is easy to guess that, working for some bandits, the player automatically became an object of hatred from their competitors ...

Grand theft auto 3

Shock, revolution, incredible - these are the words to describe this game, which was born in 2001. For the first time in the history of the series, the virtual world has become completely three-dimensional, which allowed designers to make it many times more lively, open and interactive.

The developers decided not to invent a bicycle and called new town just like the first of the three megacities Grand Theft Auto- Liberty City. Gray monoliths of skyscrapers, everyday industrial quarters, prosperous neighborhoods, foggy night highways, streams of water from a leaden sky: the employees of a small Scottish studio managed to perfectly convey the unique atmosphere of New York. Intoxicating freedom of action, dashingly twisted plot, magnificent radio stations, the best cars, bloody mafia showdowns, restless police have lifted Grand theft auto 3 to the top of the gaming Olympus, and the very mixture of gaming directions began to be called nothing more than a "gangster simulator".

As of October 2004, Gta 3 has sold over 11 million copies on PC, PS2 and Xbox. To this day, it occupies an honorable place on the shelf of every true lover of action games.

Grand theft auto: vice city

The fourth game in the lineup Gta was born in the fall of 2002 and instantly gained popularity among fans of the series and attracted the attention of many newcomers. It became clear that Rockstar north(once again renamed from Rockstar studios) set out to translate into three-dimensionality each of the cities of the very first game - Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas.

Perhaps the main advantage of the game was the appearance of a Real Hero - in Vice city the protagonist gained a name and a gift of speech, which allowed the scriptwriters to more actively involve him in the plot. Tommy Vercetti is not a dumb bipod at all; he learned not only to talk, but also to buy real estate, slowly taking over the City of Vice. Less significant, but no less useful innovations include the ability to enter buildings, ride a motorcycle and a wide range of clothing that allows you to get away from annoying cops in style.

Despite certain technical flaws and an outdated graphics engine, GTA: Vice City loved by a huge number of players - 13 million copies sold speak for themselves.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Finally, Rockstar moved all the cities from the first part to full 3D. However, in the final part of the trilogy, instead of one city, we discovered a whole state, consisting of three large metropolitan areas: Los Santos, the prototype of which was Los Angeles, San Fierro and Las Venturas, created on the basis of San Francisco and Las Vegas. respectively. Is each of them about the size of Vice City, impressive? Of course, but that's not all. We also have extensive countryside and desert with a dozen smaller towns at our disposal. And, most importantly, all this huge space is available without a single loading screen, which is present only when moving inside buildings and back to the street.

San Andreas is where you can really roam. San Andreas is a huge volcano, from which a sea of various possibilities erupts, which cannot be enumerated, and what possibilities! Tattoos, hairstyles, pumping cars, girls, stealth and RPG elements such as food, driving and shooting skills, physical characteristics, relationships with girlfriends. The protagonist finally does not wave his hands and does not puff up his eyes when entering the water, but swims and even dives! The main character has learned to shoot from two "barrels" at once. There are tons of mini games like basketball, billiards, slot machines and more. There are many new sub-missions in the game: thief, train driver, quarry worker and more.

IN GTA: San Andreas we will meet with the good old heroes from previous games in the series, as well as many different prerequisites for certain events.

In terms of graphics, the third of the 3D games in the series Gta undoubtedly prettier. The draw range was increased from two to four times, new methods of processing reflective surfaces were introduced, and each game model now exists in "day" and "night" versions. In addition, the number of polygons used in the creation of models has been significantly increased.

The number and variety of vehicles is amazing. San Andreas has about 180 land vehicles, while Vice City has “only” 120. The fleet has also been expanded from GTA: Vice City, now it has more than two dozen types of aircraft and helicopters, and, yes, we will see the legendary DoDo!

The fleet of boats has also been expanded compared to the previous installments of the series, and the hated cops have finally got motorcycles at their disposal! As for the deserts and countryside mentioned above, here we will be given a ride on such exotic means of transportation as an ATV, Bigfoot, a tractor or a harvester.

Musical accompaniment, traditional for the games of the series Gta, as always, very diverse and implemented by eleven radio stations, among which the legendary K-JAH was noticed, as well as the no less legendary Lazlow.

A popular series of games that has been pleasing gamers with its projects for more than 20 years. Rockstar is working on it. The history of "GTA" began in 1997. In each part, the gamer is offered to become a criminal who must carry out the tasks of the mafia. The player will have to virtually kill, rob banks and earn credibility.

Scale of the series

Despite the fact that the last game of the project, released in 2013, was GTA V, the developers presented 12 games in total. This does not include a couple of additions to the first and second parts. Thanks to the quality and popularity of the entire series, Grand Theft Auto sales have long exceeded 120 million copies.

First part

The history of the GTA games began in 1997. It was then that the first came out, called Grand Theft Auto for PC. At that time, it was still difficult to imagine that the project would be globally popular. It was hard to imagine that literally in 15-20 years "GTA" will become a brand. The series will be frequently mentioned not only in the gaming industry, but also in other industries.

The first episode is a two-dimensional top-down arcade game. Despite the fact that it came out before the 2000s, at that time there were already more advanced projects. Nevertheless, something caught the attention of players and in the future helped to become one of the most popular series in the world.

What has become the main reason success? The fact is that at the end of the last century, games were developed taking into account the fact that children would play them. Therefore, many were sweet, kind and simple. Grand Theft Auto appeared immediately with an 18+ rating and, in fact, turned out to be a gangster simulator.

The players were also attracted by the possibility that it was possible not to follow the game blindly, but to influence the game process themselves. Although there was no open world here, freedom of movement around the map was still a novelty then. Therefore, many gamers decided to abandon tasks and just drive aimlessly on the roads.

After the release of the first part, the developers decided to continue the story - "GTA" was replenished with a couple of new series. The London 1969 add-on was released, which allowed for a plunge during the sixties. And later there was DLC London 1961. It differed from the previous part only in that it opened up new missions and the area.

The second part

The history of the creation of "GTA" continued in 1999, when the second main part came out. A little later it was translated into Russian, and it was named "GTA 2: Lawlessness". The novelty was released on a three-dimensional engine, but it still had a top view. Thanks to the players who left feedback on the first part, the developers tried to do everything they wanted from them.

In the second part, the hero received a name. Claude became the protagonist of the series. He fights for the authority of the gangs in three districts. The players noted that the story of the new part turned out to be interesting. Developers have also worked on AI. The mechanics of the gameplay have changed, there are a lot of new opportunities for the gamer.

Breakthrough: third part

Grand Theft Auto III was released in 2002. She became the main breakout of the series. A feature of the project is three-dimensional graphics and a third-person view. Despite the fact that 3D open-world games had already been presented, players knew that Rockstar would not betray its style and would continue to promote the gangster theme.

Now we can definitely say that the project has turned out to be cult, even if it has long been outdated and very few people will now find it interesting. Thanks to its new engine, the game was able to attract the attention of newcomers. Therefore, the fan base has grown significantly.

The story of "GTA 3" and its characters interested millions of gamers, who helped it break the sales records of the previous installments. Immediately, dozens of new games began to appear that tried to repeat the success of Grand Theft Auto. And although some of them became more or less popular, they did not succeed in becoming cooler than the cult series.

In the first year, the third series received a lot of awards and almost the highest scores from reputable gaming publications. But even this did not make her the most popular. The new game attracted public attention to itself, and it turned out that not everyone is ready to put up with the fact that teenagers get acquainted with excessive cruelty.

Of course, in this sense, such disputes were justified, since the gameplay really forced the gamer to kill police officers and civilians for the sake of profit and authority in the gangs. Some were outraged that a prostitute could be removed in the game to join the protagonist. Some of the events that took place in the United States began to be associated with the harmful influence of the project on the minds of young people. As a result, even politicians started talking about the game. But since black PR is also PR, the number of players has increased exponentially. All the scandals played into the hands of Rockstar - the company received so much money that it could think about the following developments.

New story

New project was not long in coming. Now the players were able to get acquainted with the history of GTA: Vice City. In 2003, a new part was released, which was translated into Russian only in 2009. Before that, fans had to settle for custom localization.

The player is transported to Miami 1986. Naturally, we can only guess that this is Miami, since in the virtual world this city was named Vice City. Around the palm trees, beaches, half-naked girls and cool cars.

The main character of this story was Many players believe that this project appeared thanks to the film "Scarface", because there are too many references to this film.

The graphics or mechanics of the game have barely changed. The developers have focused on expanding the capabilities of the protagonist, as well as on a new story. By the way, now in "GTA" it became possible to buy real estate.

Iconic project

At that time, few gamers could have imagined that something could be done better, since the third series turned out to be really successful. But the history of GTA: San Andreas proved the opposite. In 2005 this game was released and instantly captures an even larger audience. They transferred to the Russian project in 2010.

This time again, it was not without a scandal. It turned out that cut-out erotic mini-games could be found in the resources of the game. But they were cut so badly that common hackers easily restored them to go on a virtual date. After the meeting, the lady invited the protagonist to "go for coffee", after which the episode was named Hot Coffee.

If you do not use the modification, then the player sees only the house from the side, the wobbling camera and characteristic sounds. But when this episode is hacked, you can get inside the house, where the gamer sees a naked girl. The essence of the mini-game is to quickly click on a key to satisfy your lady.

When this spicy story was discovered in GTA: SA, the game of the series immediately received an age limit of 18+, and some stores sent the game to the section with pornography. Some sellers even removed the disks from their shelves.

Since it was not profitable for the developers to narrow the audience, they fixed bugs that permanently removed the opportunity to go “for coffee” to a girl. This update was popularly called No More Hot Coffee, and the game was sold with a Mature rating.

Another scandal with GTA: SA

A new scandal again influenced the history of GTA: San Andreas. In 2006, Attorney Jack Thompson opposed the project. He tried again and again to prove to the public that the game provokes violence in reality. He believed that many, "playing a gangster", will go out into the street and start copying the virtual protagonist.

At that time, as, indeed, now, in the United States there were frequent cases of murders and unjustified aggression on the part of adolescents and adults. Many attributed this to computer games. Thompson demanded a ban on the sale of Grand Theft Auto. But the scandal did not last long. In 2008, Thompson lost his lawyer's license for trying to frame Rockstar in every possible way, insulting the developers and even being rude to the judge for denying him a lawsuit.

How did the scandal affect the project? Although the developers spent a lot of money on the trial, it also became their main advertising campaign. The game interested everyone who heard Thompson's story. Many bought the series only to see with their own eyes the "cruelty and violence" against which the lawyer fought. As a result, almost 28 million copies were sold by 2011.

Cities and locations

The history of GTA: SanAndres takes the gamer to 1992, to a fictional state. The player could have heard about San Andreas in the first part. Then this location was based on the real San Francisco. In the new series, things are a little different. The fact is that the events in the game take place in Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas. As a result, the virtual location has become five times larger than in the previous part.

Los Santos is Los Angeles. The developers managed to implement many references to a real place. Instead of the famous "Hollywood", on the hill is the inscription "Vinewood", behind which is the district of the rich. There is a dysfunctional ghetto in the city. there are many gangs in Los Santos who want to take over this place and its inhabitants.

San Fierro is San Francisco. The peculiarity of this area is the hills. Many players have tried extreme hill driving. There are trams in the city that cannot be blown up or stopped. The site has proven to be iconic thanks to its collection of cars and 24/7 racing.

Las Venturas is Las Vegas. Here, as in reality, there is a huge street with casinos and hotels everywhere. The protagonist here can gamble and risk large sums.

Characters (edit)

The history of the GTA: San Andreas characters is very interesting. The developers tried to make C-Jay interesting protagonists, which would have caused a lot of emotions at once. His real name - He was born in the Los Santos ghetto and grew up there. His story begins with the fact that he arrives in Liberty City to bury his mother. But he is arrested by corrupt cops who are trying to frame the hero.

Having got rid of the police, CJ goes to the funeral, where he meets his brother and sister, as well as a couple of acquaintances. He is told about the bad deeds of the local gang, and the protagonist decides to help.

Of course, the plot is not the coolest. Claude's story seems much more interesting. But the developers managed to make unique characters. Everyone got their own character and can easily both fall in love with themselves and alienate the gamer.

The player meets an old hippie on his way, who behaves strangely, lives with paranoia, but knows a lot of what is happening inside the gangs. The boss of the Chinese triad turned out to be interesting, fully realizing his image. The rappers, croupiers and many others turned out to be excellent.

Passing

There are few scary stories in GTA: San Andreas. CJ gets into trouble a couple of times, but he can handle it. All the most dangerous events will be associated with the gangs that are in the game. Thanks to them, CJ will advance through the game. There are four gangs in the game location: one of them includes the protagonist, the second will be friendly, but the other two will be very dangerous.

The essence of the passage is to "green" the map. The entire location is divided into sectors of different colors. Depending on the shade, you can determine where the territory of the rivals is. green color belongs to "Grove Street" - Carlos's gang. After he unleashes a war, he will need to clear the area from rivals.

To make the passage easier, the player can invite virtual comrades to the showdown. The more credibility a gamer has, the more and stronger the assistants will be. To capture one of the sectors, you need to start a war, then kill the enemies and reflect three attacks from their assistants. When the territory is under the control of "Grove Street", allies begin to patrol it.

But after the victory, do not relax. Over time, the gangs will want to take their location, so they will have to go and now defend themselves. When the gamer "greens" the entire map, enemy attacks will stop.

100% Walkthrough Guide

To cope with the passage of this game 100%, you need to complete the main story quests. There are six of them in the game. In addition, the gamer needs to complete missions in the store and auto repair shop. Trucker and courier missions will also become available. After that, you need to become a parking attendant of level 5, and then go to the quarry: there the player will have 7 missions.

Next, the player is waiting for a new movement in three gyms, several hidden tasks and competitions. Then you will need to get 12 levels as a paramedic, policeman, firefighter, and also an employee of an arms store.

The player must breed 50 taxi passengers, get 10 levels as a pimp and 2 levels as a train driver. You will also need to graduate from a boat, flying, motorcycle and driving school. Buy real estate throughout the location. Win all races in the state. After that, it remains to paint over graffiti in the city, take 50 photographs of attractions, find 50 horseshoes and oysters each.

System requirements

To play GTA: San Andreas, you needed a Pentium 3 or higher processor, random access memory enough 256 MB, any video card, necessarily a sound card and 3.6 GB of free hard disk space. There were also recommended requirements: a Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB of RAM, a video card, a sound card, and 4.7 GB of free hard disk space.

If the fifth part of the game turned out to be very demanding, and many PCs did not cope with it, then San Andreas was available to many players.

Console Exclusive

GTA: The Stories of Liberty City is a console project that was released in 2005. A year later, this part was recognized as the best-selling one. At first, it could be played on the PSP, and then all subsequent generations of PlayStation began to support it. In 2015-2016, this part became available for smartphones.

Virtually no cardinal changes have occurred with the new product. In the new part, the protagonist was who, in one of the parts, gave tasks to Claude. The player can receive all missions from authorities and other characters. In the new history of GTA, characters appear that were already known to the fans of the project.

It's not hard to guess that the game takes the gamer to Liberty City. This city at that time was already known from the previous parts. Events begin in 1998. The location is slightly modified and differs from the one presented in the third part.

A new story for the console

GTA: The Stories of Wai City is a video game that was released in 2006. The developers have not touched any mechanics or gameplay. The only thing they decided to work on was a new plot.

The gamer is transferred to 1984. The story is about Corporal Victor Vance. The man must move to Vice City to serve at another base. But there he meets a sergeant who is closely associated with crime. A couple of illegal services and Victor loses his job. It remains for him to go to his friend Phil Cassidy.

In "GTA: The Stories of Wai City" the player will have to get involved in the gangster business again. In addition, to complete the passage, you will again have to get the required level of a policeman, firefighter, paramedic and taxi. But these tasks have become more varied. Now it will be possible to fly a medical helicopter, extinguish a fire from the air and patrol the beach.

You can use cheats for "GTA: Wai City Stories" to quickly cope with missions. For example, if you install the appropriate pack of codes, you can open a certain percentage of multiplayer content. You can also repaint all the cars in the game black, get armor and the necessary weapons.

There are also codes for clear weather, explosion of all cars, fast time and gameplay, a certain amount of money, etc. With cheats for any part of the GTA, you can significantly simplify the passage of the game.

Reboot

In 2008, the game "GTA 4" appears. The project became really good as the developers reworked the graphics. But innovations prevented many players from enjoying the project, since there were high requirements for the hardware. And if earlier each new series lagged noticeably behind other projects in technology, and took only in scale and by the very idea, then such innovations had a significant impact on sales and popularity.

The gamer finds himself in Liberty City again. But this is no longer the location that was encountered before. And the new story does not intersect at all with those that were before. This time, the developers tried to make an exact copy of New York from Liberty City, while distorting the names of key locations.

In the new part of GTA, scary stories now take place with Niko Bellic. The protagonist is originally from Eastern Europe. He arrived in the United States to start a new life. The authors of the game made him a former military man who could not find a job in his homeland, so he was engaged in smuggling there. Due to the incident, Niko had to leave the country to avoid reprisals from his boss.

After this part, there were a couple more for consoles and PCs that were not very memorable. But the real breakthrough was the release of the fifth episode.

Gta v

The scariest stories in GTA began in the fifth part. The game was released in 2013 for consoles, in 2014 for new consoles, and in 2015 for PC. The player is transported to San Andreas. Now the passage is available at once for three people. Each of them is ready for the most terrible things. They rob, kill and wreak havoc.

The world in the new part turned out to be huge, so it is not surprising that many needed codes to pass. The history of GTA 5 turned out to be interesting for everyone. The players were glad that at any time they could switch from one character to another. The surrounding landscapes have become the idea for hundreds of desktop wallpapers. The virtual world turned out to be very large-scale. It could be overcome by any type of transport. Many were happy to fly a military helicopter and crush vehicles on a tank.

The fifth part turned out to be very expensive. The developers have invested a lot of money both in the game itself and in its promotion. As a result, she became the most popular in the series. By 2018, sales of copies of the game exceeded 95 million. Only Tetris and Minecraft are ahead.

Because of this popularity, a huge number of mods were invented for GTA V. They did not affect gameplay or storyline. For example, you could install the Toy Story mod. In GTA 5, the main characters turned into the characters of this cartoon. The modification looks funny, but despite this, it is still not suitable for children, since the essence of the game does not change. It's just that cartoon characters begin to run around with weapons and kill and rob everyone around them in the same way.

Cult game

Among the people who are interested in computer games, there are definitely no ones left who have not heard about the Grand Theft Auto series. Many have gone through at least 5 main parts of the project. There are those who know almost all the series, not considering the console options. The developers managed to create their own style that everyone remembered. Despite numerous scandals, the project remains afloat. He does not seem to many players as dangerous as some activists say about him. And numerous awards say quite the opposite.

Popularity is different not only in show business, but also in the world of computer games. Civilization made history forever thanks to clever gameplay. DOOM remembered by everyone as the first network and first three-dimensional game (although this is not entirely true). The sims and its numerous add-ons have grabbed the lead in terms of the number of copies sold. And the most scandalous popularity in the entire history of the industry won, of course, Grand Theft Auto... Moreover, unlike the aforementioned "champions" Gta became famous and popular far from immediately. Before getting into the game charts, appearing on the pages of newspapers, causing legal proceedings and falling under a barrage of puritanical criticism, she had to go, albeit not a very long, but very entertaining way. The path from an ugly two-dimensional “duckling” to a hardened black “swan”.

20 million lemmings can't be wrong

"Preparation" for the greatest car theft game began in the Scottish town of Dundee in the early 80s. Despite the fact that the history of MS at that time totaled only a couple of years, and Dundee himself was not at all considered the center of civilization, there was a computer club even in this small town. This place was called KACC (Kingsway amateur Computer club), and it was located on the territory of the local technical college Kingsway ( Kingsway Technical College).

Its regulars were not only college students, but also quite adult uncles, such as Dave Jones- company member Timex, which supplied components for Sinclair Research Ltd... Often visited KACC and boys, including fourteen Mike Daly... Despite the age difference, Dave and Mike were united by one hobby - computer games. Moreover, both of them were more interested not in games as such, but in their development. The same was carried away by two more regular visitors of the club - Russell Kay and Steve Hammond... All these “magnificent four” met each other precisely at the KACC club, and by 1984 they had become bosom friends.

Interesting fact: at the University of Ebertey ( University of Abertay Dundee) located in their hometown, at that time some of the world's first courses in game programming were opened. Jones, who went straight out of school to work at Timex without graduating, decided to take the opportunity. After some deliberation, he quit his job and entered Ebertey for the aforementioned courses. The preparation was not in vain: before finishing his studies, Dave started developing his first projects. His first gaming experiments in the early 80s - arcade Moonshadow and a couple more similar games for Commodore 64 and Amstrad- did not represent anything remarkable. However, they made it possible to earn some good money and acquire the most valuable thing - experience.

At the same time, Mike Daley also took the first steps in game development, but his achievements were even more modest - playing Freek Out, a black and white clone of the famous Arkanoid.

Finally, Jones decided that it was time to move from handicraft experiments to serious business. And so in 1987 he opens a company called DMA Design(with the money that he earned through the sale of his first projects), the original composition of which, in addition to him, includes Kay and Hammond. A little later, Mike joins them. DMA originally stood for Direct Mind Access("Direct access to the brain"), thus playing on the well-known technical term Direct Memory Access... However, a few years later, DMA Design employees began to decipher the name of their company even more amusingly - how Doesn "t Mean Anything(“Doesn't mean anything at all”).

The first DMA games were games Menace and Blood money- classic side-scrollers with a space theme. Gamers appreciated the graphical appeal of these simple shooters, but quite rightly criticized them for their brutal complexity.

The first notoriety came to DMA already in 1990, with the release of the game Lemmings... The original strategic gameplay with interesting puzzles and a healthy sense of humor did not leave players indifferent, and in the first year the game sold over 60,000 copies in one version for Commodore 64... You can read more about Lemmings in the previous issue “ Gambling addiction”In the heading Game Over?, let's just say that with all the sequels and re-releases, this game has sold a total circulation of more than 20 million copies. We can rightfully say that up to the mid-90s, DMA earned its main money (and name!) Precisely on "Lemmings".

The key to start!

Grand Theft Auto

At the end of 1994, at the suggestion of Dave Jones, DMA Design begins work on a new project - Grand Theft Auto, or, in an abbreviated form, GTA. It was developed for two platforms at once (PC and PlayStation ) almost three years. And in November 1997, the game went gold. On this day, one of the most important revolutions in the gaming industry took place. True, no one has noticed this yet, including the "revolutionaries" themselves. What was the very first GTA?

Run fresh GTA: San Andreas, switch the camera to top view. Now remove from the game a good half of the possibilities, reduce the resolution to 640x480, and replace the 3D graphics with a typical sprite engine of the mid-90s. This is the original GTA.

Nominally, GTA was considered an ordinary arcade, but in fact, many different elements were mixed in it: 2D races, action, quests and even (unprecedented for an arcade!) A non-linear campaign. For the most accurate description of the newborn genre, the term “simulator of banditry” would be suitable. But this definition is lame on both legs, because the reckless arcade nature of what is happening has been preserved even in the latest versions of the game, not to mention the first part.

The main highlight of GTA from the very first part of it was freedom, and most of all it was in the first part of the game. There was not even a plot here, only a set of loosely connected missions that could be performed in almost any order. Moreover, one could not give a damn about tasks at all and earn money in any convenient way. And money in the first GTA was given out for everything. Hijacked a car? Get a cash bonus. Sell your car? Get even more. Moved a pedestrian? Keep your pocket wider - literally. Two pedestrians at once ?! Open it even wider!

After a certain amount was collected as a result of the paid lawlessness, access to a new city was opened. By the way, do you know what the cities were called in the first GTA? Liberty city, San andreas and Vice city.

Unfortunately, the graphics in GTA were far from perfect even by 1997 standards. The only significant achievement of the engine was the ability to change the scale depending on the speed of movement, which made it possible to expand the field of view at high speeds (by the way, the mini-map works in exactly the same way in GTA III and later). There were obvious problems with rendering everything else: flying bullets were displayed in tiny heaps of pixels (just like in prehistoric shooters), crushed pedestrians most of all resembled cockroaches slammed with slippers, and the animation was simply terrible. The sound was not impressive either: the effects were made on a C, there was no speech at all - it was replaced by meaningless muttering in one of the dialects of Sims-gibberish. Only the soundtrack was good, which included more than an hour of music from the most popular directions of those times: techno, funk, hip-hop, industrial, country and heavy.

But despite its technical backwardness, GTA was fascinating. It was a game from the series "love at first sight" - she either did not like it at all, or liked it immediately, and then she could be forgiven for all the shortcomings. And unpretentious graphics, and the lack of voice acting, and high complexity, and inconvenient navigation in a huge virtual world, and much more.

Game editions greeted GTA quite predictably - with coolness. In the days of total insanity on three-dimensional graphics, games were usually greeted by their clothes, or rather, by the engine. However, the "drain" GTA also "did not count", appreciating its original gameplay, dark humor and perfectly balanced style. At the same time, a stable community of fans began to form around the game, without which no more or less worthy project can do. And no one doubted that GTA was a successful project, which means it was worthy of continuation.

While some of the DMA Design employees were busy finishing the PlayStation version, the rest began to develop the first add-on - GTA: London 1969 - and the sequel Grand theft auto ii.

At the same time, another significant event took place. The publisher of the first GTA was bought by one of the industry giants - Take2 Interactive... And the rights to GTA, respectively, passed to her. Take2 was not going to stop there and openly expressed interest in buying DMA Design itself. Dave Jones, who still did not understand what kind of diamond he found in a heap of ... uh-uh ... lemmings, decided that it would be a sin not to take advantage of such a tempting offer, and in 1999 he sold the company. DMA was acquired by Take2 and incorporated into the studio Rockstar games.

If Jones could appreciate the genius of his own gameplay, he would now be a millionaire. But Dave bet on the wrong horse by founding a new company in 2002 Real time worlds who released only one mediocre shooter Mobile forces... Meanwhile, a game locomotive called GTA was picking up speed.

Three huge virtual cities.

Countless roads, highways, boulevards and streets with a total length of almost 10,000 kilometers.

Hospitals, banks, strip clubs, military bases, police stations, ports.

There are 20 types of cars in each city, all with their own unique behavior and speed.

Availability of city services: police, firefighters, doctors and public transport.

Different levels of police aggressiveness depending on the player's actions - from complete ignorance to the hunt for complete destruction.

Supports up to four players when playing over a network or modem.

More than an hour of music in the styles of techno, dance, funk, hip-hop, industrial, heavy metal and country.

Over 200 different missions, including car thefts, drug smuggling, kidnapping, terrorist attacks, contract killings and robberies.

Bloodshed!

Weapons: pistol, machine gun, grenade launcher, flamethrower.

Game bonuses: armor, extra lives, bribe to the police, “excuse” from prison, “multiplier” (all money received is multiplied by a coefficient), accelerator (running, driving and shooting become faster).

GTA: London 1969

A whole virtual London, including the Tower, Big Ben and other architectural landmarks.

More than 20 new cars in the style of the 70s.

New soundtrack, also in the style of the 70s.

New missions, more varied, even more difficult.

Bloodshed! Bigger and more realistic!

There is a small break between the first and second

The first addon to GTA appeared just a year after the original game was released. The innovations in London 1969 could be counted on the fingers of one hand: a new virtual city (almost an exact copy of London), 20 new cars, crushed pedestrians lying in pools of blood began to look a little more believable, the soundtrack was completely updated. Everything else hasn't changed one iota.

In 1999, GTA III came out with the Rockstar logo on the cover. However, in the sequel, the dosage of innovations was more than modest: the graphics were a little prettier, the sound effects improved, and a new musical accompaniment appeared again. In GTA II, there were no longer three cities, but one huge metropolis of three parts with a unique set of cars in each district. There were 40 cars in the game's fleet in total.

Unlike the first part, GTA II was received much more hostilely by both the press and the players. The novelty effect was already absent, and the main shortcomings of the series - inconvenient navigation and backward video sequences - were never eliminated. Carried away by criticism, almost everyone overlooked another interesting innovation in GTA II - the presence of six different and often warring criminal clans, each of which the player could join at will.

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969

Grand theft auto ii

After the second part, it became finally clear that the ingenious concept is simply cramped within the existing technological framework. Free-spirited gameplay needed another degree of freedom - visual. And Rockstar began developing a new, fully 3D Grand theft auto iii... Its release was scheduled for 2001 ...

To be continued...

Grand Theft Auto (1997)

The first game in the GTA series grew out of the concept of a racing project, tentatively titled Race'n'Chase, in which, as planned by game makers from the DMA Design studio (later it would be renamed Rockstar North and become a part), there should have been three cities, top view , big choice cars, many missions with different goals - from racing competitions to, as well as the ability to knock down pedestrians and push the cars of rivals.

Race'n'Chase never came out, becoming Grand Theft Auto during development. The authors deepened and expanded the previously invented concept, adding to it the ability to get out of the car and move freely on foot, participate in fights and shootings, chase with the police, and so on. In multiplayer, gamers could fight each other in deathmatch mode and participate in racing races. It was in the first game that the basic principles of the entire franchise were laid - complete freedom of action, a variety of missions related to criminal activity. The famous "wanted stars" of the police, radio stations and central cities for the entire line of video games - Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City.

However, in terms of the plot, the debut game of the GTA series could not boast of an interesting content: the main goal of the nameless criminal was to gain a certain amount of points (money) that could be earned by stealing cars, killing people and completing simple missions issued from telephone booths. In this game, the gameplay prevailed over the plot, which, however, was positively received by the audience: the first GTA received high marks in the press and good sales.

GTA: London 1969, GTA: London 1961 (1999)

Two years later, two additions followed that brought the action of Grand Theft Auto into the 60s (these are the only projects in the series that take place outside and in a real city). Here, the authors tried to recreate the authentic British atmosphere and fill the DLC with many references to the culture of the 60s. But apart from this addition, they did not develop the original game in any way, and even differed in higher complexity, so they were not very warmly received, although they sold quite well.

Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)

In the same year, the sequel to GTA (in a localized version called GTA 2: Mayhem) went on sale. This time, DMA Design decided to fantasize about the future and moved the action of the game to 2013. The main character got the name - Claude Speed, and the events took place in the city Anywhere City (literally "City Anywhere"), which combined the style of retro and.

In the course of the GTA 2 storyline, Claude tried to make a name for himself in the criminal world of Anywhere City. You can achieve what you want with the help of the good old crimes: theft, robbery and murder. The city was divided into several districts, each of which was run by rival gangs: you could join them by gaining access to various tasks. The final goal, as in the first part, was to accumulate a certain amount of money in the hero's account.

If the additions to the original game brought almost no innovations to the gameplay, then the sequel could boast of this to a greater extent (as well as more). So, the world became livelier and richer: criminals and the police entered battles even without the participation of the player, car thieves appeared on the streets, and ordinary pedestrians reacted more adequately to the actions of the protagonist. The player could do not only crimes, but also secondary missions, such as delivering passengers to. The first GTA added SWAT, federal agents, and the army, which came into play at high wanted levels. Finally, the main innovation - the game got the ability to save in certain places, which was not in the first part.

Of course, there was also Grand Theft Auto 2 multiplayer with three modes. In general, the game received positive reviews and brought profit to the developers. On this wave, the development of the multiplayer project Grand Theft Auto: Online Crime World began with a top view and a style similar to GTA 2, but for some reason it never saw the light of day.

GTA in 3D

Grand Theft Auto III (2001)

With the release of GTA 2, the developers have announced new game in the series, Grand Theft Auto 3D, which came out two years later without the "D" in the title.

This is interesting: In connection with the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, game developers had to postpone the release of the game in order to make changes to it. So, the color scheme of police cars, copied from police equipment, was replaced with a more neutral one, and one of the characters who tried to influence the city's economy by means of terror was cut out of the game. The missions associated with him, respectively, have also been removed.

In addition, it is known that multiplayer was developed for GTA III, but it had to be abandoned (this is not related to the terrorist attacks).

Grand Theft Auto III introduced gamers to a fully three-dimensional Liberty City, the prototype of which was New York. The game was set in 2001: the main character, a silent criminal named Claude, worked for various mafia groups, performing a variety of tasks. The set of missions, of course, focused on the criminal activities of the protagonist: hijacking, smuggling, extortion, murder, and so on. Along the way, the hero tried to find a former mistress named Catalina, who betrayed him at the beginning of the game, and take revenge on her.

Needless to say, what effect did GTA III have? Players who dreamed of seeing their favorite series in honest 3D (the option to include a classic top view for conservatives was present) got what they wanted. Moreover, the gameplay mechanics, for the most part, remained the same, which was positively appreciated by the audience. The game looked especially good on PCs and Xbox consoles, with the former supporting high resolutions, while the latter boasted sharper textures and detailed models. Despite strong criticism due to numerous scenes of violence, the first 3D GTA became profitable for the developers and the publisher.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)

GTA III made a successful debut in 3D, while Vice City developed and consolidated its success. This time the action moved to Vice City (Miami) in 1986, where the main character, Tommy Vercetti, tried to take revenge on his former boss and, along the way, ascend the city's criminal Olympus.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City took not so much the plot and tasks (which, by the way, were great here), as the atmosphere of a serene coastal city. Here I often wanted to distract myself from missions, hijack a convertible and ride along the ocean coast to the compositions of that time - from hard rock to old-school hip-hop.

This is interesting: The famous helicopter mission, which did not succumb to so many players, was actually not that difficult. This is all due to the peculiarities of the Vice City engine, which (in short) calculated the speed of movement of objects from their animation, and it, in turn, was tied to the frame rate. If the game was running on weak computers that were unable to reproduce a picture with a frame rate higher than 30 fps, then the animations were calculated incorrectly, but the task timer did not slow down.

Because of this, it turned out that gamers did not have enough time to successfully complete the mission. Accordingly, owners of powerful PCs were deprived of this problem.

GTA: Vice City has also become an ideal platform for creating a wide variety of mods (however, this is true for all parts of the franchise that followed it). Thanks to enthusiasts, players were able to download modifications that replace models of characters, cars and weapons, improve textures and even send an invasion to Vice City.

With cutting-edge graphics, addictive gameplay, and full open-world capabilities, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was a huge success, becoming the best-selling game of 2002.

GTA Advance (2004)

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2005)

While Rockstar North (formerly DMA Design) worked on the main series Games Grand Theft Auto, lower ranked studios were releasing additional projects for handheld consoles. Such a game was Liberty City Stories for PSP, which offered players to once again plunge into the criminal life of Liberty City: a protagonist named Tony Cipriani participated in a showdown between Italian, Latin American gangs and the Chinese Triad.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006)

The next "pocket" game was Vice City Stories for the same PSP. As the name suggests, the action was set in Vice City, with Victor Vance as the main character trying to establish (not always honest) in a city saturated with crime.

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)

In the fourth numbered part of the series, the developers decided to turn to the Slavic theme: the action of GTA IV unfolded around an immigrant from South-Eastern Europe (presumably Serbia) Niko Bellic, who arrived in Los Santos in 2008 in search of better life... On the spot, it turned out that Niko's cousin Roman, who sang his praises about the "American Dream", himself achieved almost nothing. Therefore, the hero has to take the path of crime, since the veteran of the Yugoslav War is no stranger to fights and shootings.

For obvious reasons, Grand Theft Auto IV was closer than ever to gamers from the post-Soviet expanses. Native swear words and signs in Russian in local Brighton Beach (in the game the area was called Hove Beach), Basta and Ranetki on Vladivostok FM, the famous "Why eat cabbage if you have potatoes" - every pixel of the image was saturated with Slavic flavor.

However, not only this could boast of the "four". The open world, not as big as in San Andreas (only one city instead of three), but much more elaborate and rich (only on the Internet it was possible to spend whole hours, not to mention bowling or a bar). An interesting plot, where there was a place for both acute social satire and a tear-knocking drama. Impressive physics model that made the machines behave like real life, and the characters' bodies were subject to authentic skeletal animation. Multiplayer with a large selection of modes. The pleasure was overshadowed only by a weak one, especially in the PC version.

Traditionally for the series, GTA IV showed high sales, and in 2009 received two major story add-ons The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, the first of which immersed players in the everyday life of a biker gang, and the second dipped into the nightlife of Liberty City. Both DLCs told new stories, but also partially revealed the plot details of the main game.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (2009)

Rockstar Games is the trendsetting studio

Talking about GTA, one cannot fail to mention the people who are working on this franchise. At the head of Rockstar Games are brothers Dan and Sam Houser - talented writers, producers and developers of video games. It is thanks to their scripts that we enjoy captivating stories in GTA (as well as RDR, Bully, Max Payne 3 and other games). It is their ideas that form the basis of the inventive gameplay mechanics in the aforementioned projects. Finally, it was their (and hundreds of other employees) painstaking work that raised Rockstar Games, in accordance with the name of the studio, to the rank of a true rock star of the gaming industry.

What's next?

Is Rockstar Games working on? Undoubtedly it works, but we won't see this game until the next generation of consoles goes on sale. What will the new GTA be like? Despite the insiders and rumors walking on the Web, we will not know anything about it until the official announcement - the developers very carefully guard the secrets of their games. One thing is certain right now: whatever Grand Theft Auto VI is, it will surely impress us with the highest quality of performance and interesting gameplay innovations - Rockstar can't do it any other way.

Which part of the series do you like the most? Relaxed Vice City? The immense San Andreas? Serious GTA IV? Crazy GTA V? Let us know in the comments.

Pour yourself a cup of hot coffee, sit back and get ready to travel the world of GTA from its inception to the present day.

5 years ago, if you said that the games of the GTA series would have a huge impact on the entire gaming industry, acquire millions of fans around the world, they would be equal and imitate them, then hardly anyone would have believed you. In those days, GTA was only very controversial and not always brilliant, a kind of "bad guy simulator" on the streets of a big city. Unpretentious sprite 2D graphics even at that time looked somehow frivolous, but nevertheless, people who understood good games saw behind this seeming simplicity the huge potential of almost unlimited freedom and fun. After all, only the hardware limitations of that time did not allow to show the full breadth of the game's creators. At the beginning, the game was developed by small company DMA, which later changed its name to the well-known Rockstar North. It was these guys who were able to make the great GTA III out of an ordinary arcade, which became not only a hit in the world of games, but also a cultural phenomenon that sets the tone for games of the early XXI century! It has been a long and arduous journey at this stage, and the Grand Theft Auto series is considered one of the best in the history of computer games.

Grand Theft Auto - The Beginning

On February 28, 1998, that day changed the world of video games forever, although it would take another 3 years for GTA to be taken seriously. On this day, Grand Theft Auto was released on PC and later on Play Station. By that time, the DMA company had a wonderful game "Lemmings" to its credit, but the popularity of GTA increased over time, leaving small and funny creatures far behind, somewhere in childhood. GTA sought to show novelty in everything: a huge city in which there are a lot of various buildings, objects and roads, complete freedom to explore this city, a wide choice of transport and a lot of music. The city was divided into three large districts that bore painfully familiar names: Liberty City, Vice City and of course San Andreas.

In the world of GTA, you could do anything, you could perform many interesting tasks, you can spit on the law, rush around the city in a stolen car and crush pedestrians without a twinge of conscience, you could, drawing your weapon, chase the townspeople on foot, earning on this fun entertainment a lot of money. There were also so-called mini-games in the game, which is worth the pursuit of the Hare Krishnas, with the inevitable execution of the latter! Although in those years the first 3D games began to appear, but the DMA company decided to go the proven way - GTA was completely two-dimensional with a virtual camera fixed somewhere in the sky. Hurricane gameplay, humor and a good plot fell in love with many gamers, and at the request of the public on April 29, 1999, DMA released an add-on on PC and Play Station: GTA: London 1969. The game takes place in the capital of England at a specified period of time. The add-on contained 30 new missions, as many new vehicles, and, of course, a new soundtrack in the style of the time.

GTA 2 - respect is everything

GTA - became a national hit and DMA could not help but release a sequel, which appeared on October 29, 1999 on PC and Play Station. GTA 2 took the famous non-linear gameplay from its little brother, significantly improved artificial intelligence and had a completely new and interesting storyline. The game takes place in the not too distant future, in the game there are seven different criminal gangs that are fighting for domination in the city. The main leitmotif of the game was to gain respect among these factions: any door to success in this world is open to someone who is respected. In the game, you can receive tasks from the leaders of the bandits, or you can simply ride around the city, arranging fights with whomever you like.

The developers still did not want to make the GTA world three-dimensional, and the player had no choice but to watch the game from a bird's eye view. The graphics of the game underwent significant changes and looked much better than the original GTA. In 2000, GTA 2 was released on the famous Dreamcast console. The game sold well and the army of GTA fans was replenished with even more fans, but as it turned out it was only a warm-up before an absolute hit - the great and terrible GTA III.

GTA 3 - everything that is not done is done for the better

With the release of new generation consoles, new era three-dimensional games. This phenomenon did not pass by the developers from the DMA company (the staff of which was significantly increased, and now the company became known as Rockstar). The long-awaited release of the game on Play Station 2 took place on October 23, 2001 (the release was postponed due to the tragic events of September 11 in New York, as the game could cause a negative reaction from people). The game was released on PC on May 21, 2002. Fully three-dimensional world, even greater freedom to explore the world around, a huge selection of vehicles and weapons, a very interesting and thoughtful plot and memorable characters. All this provided the game with immense popularity, the game was bought very well, thereby setting a record on the PS2 for the number of copies sold. Many players played the game for several months, completing additional tasks and finding many interesting places in the huge city of Liberty City. All this splendor was flavored with excellent and sometimes even cynical humor, and what a soundtrack the game had!

Another important factor that influenced the popularity of the game is the ability to make various modifications to the PC version of the game and change many parameters of the game as you please. A huge number of fan sites appeared from which you could download your favorite skin, vehicle model or modification that changes the world beyond recognition. All this together made GTA III a trendsetter in the world of games of those years, there was even a special genre: "Game in the style of GTA".

GTA: Vice City - success is money

Rockstar Games never expected such a success from GTA III and of course released a sequel, but what a! GTA Vice City went on sale on October 29, 2002 in the PS2 version and on May 13, 2003 in the PC version. Vice City was very different from GTA III, if in Liberty City it was constantly cloudy, then in Vice City the sun was almost always shining, and this is not surprising, because, according to the developers' plan, the game takes place in sunny California in the 80s of the XX century! The unique atmosphere of the resort town, girls in bikinis, nightclubs and reckless residents of the resort, constantly high on mafiosi, luxurious cars and motorcycles. The game world has become even larger, the gameplay has become even more interesting, and the graphics are more beautiful. Rockstar has signed a contract with Sony to add even more quality and favorite music to the game. No wonder the soundtrack for the game is called the best soundtrack in games, it was released separately as much as 7 CDs!

The main character, Tommy Vercetti, has finally found charisma, which was so lacking in the heroes of the previous games in the series, voiced by the magnificent actor Ray Liotta, Tomi spoke, not forgetting to joke and sarcastically communicating with no less interesting characters in the game. One more interesting feature the main character, became the ability to change clothes depending on where he was going to go - to a party or to a drink to his friend - Phil Cassidy! Tommy can now buy property that generates a stable income and that can be used as a safe house, that is, to save the game. All of this really liked the players who loved Vice City more than the unforgettable GTA III.

Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack - Fun doubly

Until the next GTA game, it was still 2 years, but Rockstar did not let fans take a breath, and soon released the licensed version of GTAIII and GTA: Vice City in one box, not only on Sony Play Station 2, but also on X-BOX. Now fans of Bill Gates' creation could see what GTA is! And X-Box owners appreciated this gift from Rockstar: the game sold very well on this platform. Everyone wondered what would happen next, because in terms of technology, Vice City squeezed out of the PS2 everything that this console was capable of, and many believed that Rockstar would wait for the release of a new generation of consoles to create new world in the GTA universe. But how great developers ended up at Rockstar, they managed to create this world on PS2, as it turned out, it was too early to write off the old PS2 lady.

GTA: San Andreas - the invention of the bicycle

When Rockstar officially announced the creation of a sequel to GTA, but did not provide the facts, there were many rumors about the name of the future game on the web regarding the sequel to GTA. Someone said that the game would be called GTA 4. Someone argued that the action would take place in Sin City or Sin Sity, someone foaming at the mouth argued that the game would take place in Tokyo in 2010 ... And only experienced fans understood perfectly well that if there were Liberty City and Vice City, then it is logical that the next city should be San Andreas. And these people were absolutely right, only it was no longer a city, it was a whole state - San Andreas. San Andreas consisted of 3 huge cities plus the countryside that lay between these cities. The territory of San Andreas was of unprecedented size, it is 5 times larger than the territory of Vice City, and each area of the vast world is unlike other areas and is unique in its own way: In San Andreas, forests are replaced by desert, deserts are replaced by small towns and farms, and these, in turn, are spacious city streets. It seems incredible, but such a huge world fit on a single-layer DVD without any problems, including a traditionally large amount of music and conversations of the citizens of the state. And all this splendor works seamlessly on PS2! The game was traditionally released first on Play Station 2 on October 26, 2004, and on X-BOX and PC on June 7, 2005.

It is impossible to briefly list all the innovations that were included in the game: these are bicycles, and the ability of the protagonist to swim, in general, many RPGs were introduced into the game - elements such as: nutrition, attractiveness, inflatedness, possession of weapons and martial arts, and much more. The ability to change any clothes, hairstyles, tattoos made it possible to make a completely unique character out of the main character, unlike others. In addition, the main character was a black guy named Carl Johnson or CJ. In general, the plot of the game is written very well and allows you to feel the atmosphere of a real American ghetto, filled with fun and despair, criminals and honest people. In general, CJ is the most charismatic and memorable character in the games of the GTA series, and he is not the only one: the corrupt police officer Frank Tanpenny, superbly voiced by Samuel L Jackson, fits well into the atmosphere of the game. It seems surprising, but the new part of GTA once again made a sensation in the world of games and proved that every time it gets better and better. Even the famous Hot Coffe scandal did not prevent the game from becoming one of the best games decades.

Rockstar recently released a special edition of GTA: San Andreas for PS2, which includes the Sunday Draiver documentary in addition to the game itself.

Grand Theft Auto Advance - GTA in your pocket

In the fall of 2004, a rather unexpected release took place: GTA was released on the Game Boy Advance pocket console. Of course, the capabilities of this simple console were not enough to port GTA III to it, but the ported Grand Theft Auto looks pretty good on it. The game takes place in Liberty City, specially for this game was written new plot, and some additions were made. The game is still two-dimensional, but at some points in the game, you can turn on the pseudo-three-dimensional mode. So it's fun to play even now. Having released the game on the GBA, Rockstar was convinced that it was good at making GTA for this segment of the gaming market, the company decided to continue working in this direction and began porting GTA III to the then-unreleased new generation handheld console - PSP.

GTA: Liberty City Stories - Return to Liberty City

The PSP's capabilities are impressive, this small handheld console supports fully 3D games with a relatively large game world, can play music quality and much more. But so far, only GTA: Liberty City Stories has unleashed the full potential of the PSP. The game was released quite recently: October 25, 2005 and has already won worldwide recognition. Judge for yourself a fully three-dimensional Liberty City from GTA III, repeating it almost completely, the only difference is that some objects have not yet been completed, because the game takes place several years before those shown in GTA III. The famous bridges have not yet been completed and residents use ferry to travel between the islands. Now you can ride motorcycles in a familiar city, a lot of new weapons, a lot of music, a very interesting plot, many characters are familiar to us from GTA III, the game has multiplayer and a lot of other interesting things. Add to this the ability to listen to your favorite MP3s, despite the fact that the soundtrack for the game is very extensive and varied. So at the moment GTA: LCS is the perfect game for a pocket console, a lot of people bought it just for GTA!

The medal has 2 sides

Despite all the glory of GTA, the game is very often criticized. From the very first games, the series has been accused of excessive cruelty and lack of political correctness. GTA III is accused of provoking murders, you probably remember the story of that Japanese boy who outplayed GTA III who killed his parents and blamed GTA III for this terrible crime. The game has been banned for sale in some prefectures in Japan. Vice City was accused of calling for nationalism and almost fascism, representatives of the Haitian and Cuban nations living in the United States made such a statement. GTA San Andreas was accused of the presence of pornography due to hidden, but revealed with the help of a special modification, explicit scenes of sex between CJ and his girlfriends, the result of this high-profile scandal was that the game was banned from selling in Australia, and Rockstar suffered multimillion-dollar losses and was forced to release a special version of the game that lacks these scenes. People forget that a game is only a game and should not be treated as something more. Do not forget that GTA games do not call for violence or drug use, they only give a chance to feel like a bad guy in the game, which is much better than doing all these things in real life.

In spite of everything, each new part of the series is getting better and better, and in spite of everything, more and more people are playing it. of different ages, few games can boast that they have managed to interest so many completely different people... We wish Rockstar further success in creating the new GTA on the next generation consoles, it is already known that it will be Sony Play Station 3 with truly fantastic features. We wish Rockstar to learn from the mistakes of the past, not to repeat them in the future and not to make new ones.

Play GTA games and have fun, because these games are made with soul and professionalism.
