What is speed reading?

Speed reading (or quick reading) is the ability to quickly comprehend textual information using special reading methods. Fast reading is 3-4 times faster than normal reading. (Wikipedia).

In one of the most popular schools of "speed reading" in Russia, the school of Oleg Andreev, it is said that after passing 2 stages of training, you can reach a reading speed of 10,000 characters per minute, which is about 5-7 pages of an average book.

It turns out that for a half-hour ride on the subway at such a speed, you can read 150-200 pages of a book. This is much more than the average person will read in such a time.

In addition to the "School of Oleg Andreev", such well-known experts in speed reading as Natalia Grace, Andrey Spodin, Vladimir and Ekaterina Vasiliev and many others offer their courses. However, some people have learned to read quickly without attending courses, schools, trainings and special centers, as well as without reading fast reading textbooks - you even know many of them, these are Maxim Gorky, Vladimir Lenin, Thomas Edison and many others. Therefore, try first to learn yourself, especially since it will cost you nothing.

How fast do you read?

We suggest that you check how fast you read. To do this, read the text in the exercise below and answer a few assimilation questions.

Course Description

This course is designed to master the skill of fast reading. This skill of speed reading is most useful for studying Internet resources, informational articles, for reading newspapers, magazines, popular science literature, textbooks. Fast reading will allow you not only to read texts faster, but also to master information better - to find it and memorize it in order of priority.

This training involves daily exercises at home or at work for 20-40 minutes (you can do it less often, but then the effect will be less). The course consists of 5 stages, each of which assumes the development of certain skills that help to read quickly. To master the skill, it is important to practice more - read articles on resources of interest to you (for example, your favorite sections in Wikipedia), read newspapers, magazines, textbooks - devote at least half an hour a day to this.

With this mode of study, you will receive results in a couple of weeks, and if you practice for 2-3 months, you can significantly increase the speed and quality of reading.

How to learn to read quickly?

To learn to read quickly on this site, simply follow the exercises in 5 lessons. If you try to summarize the various techniques for teaching fast reading, then the process of mastering this skill can be divided into 5 parts (this is 5 lessons). Each lesson allows you to master a specific skill that will increase your reading speed and your learning efficiency. The content of the lessons is structured in such a way that it was possible to study online as interactively and conveniently as possible without teachers and tutors.

First, look at all the lessons, try to complete the exercises, if a skill is given to you quickly, then do not dwell on this lesson for a long time. For example, many people have no attentional problems when reading and are able to skip straight to Lesson 2. Pay more attention to lessons and activities that:

  1. seem useful to you
  2. cause you trouble.

It is not necessary to go through the exercises in the sequence indicated in the lessons, the main thing is to achieve the set goal for each part.

5 quick reading lessons

5 skills useful for fast reading, which you can learn on our website:

1. Concentration of attention(LESSON 1)
You've probably noticed that an interesting book is read in one breath and faster than a boring textbook. Also, for example, when reading interesting book you gradually accelerate, immersing yourself in the reading process ... Attention is very important for speed reading, and most importantly, it can be trained.

2. Suppression of articulation (pronunciation of the text)(LESSON 2)
Most people have a habit of reading text by saying it to themselves. If you want to read the text quickly, you need to do it "silently", that is, relieving yourself of articulation.

3. Improving visual skills(LESSON 3)
The ability to see all the text at once in a paragraph or even on a page, to understand its structure, to read not from left to right, but from top to bottom (or, as they say, "diagonally") is an important skill for fast reading. Therefore, visual skills also need to be trained, and in life they can be useful when driving a car, in playing sports, etc. The lesson contains special tables and a simulator for training speed reading.

4. Fast reading and information management(LESSON 4)
It's no secret that most of the texts have only a small part useful information which you must learn to find quickly. This skill comes most often with reading experience, but you can speed up the process with specific exercises.

5. Speed reading and memory development(LESSON 5)
When you learn to read quickly, you will be able to absorb a lot of information. But the skill of fast reading may turn out to be useless if the read is forgotten, which, in principle, is not strange, with such a volume of information. You need to be able to memorize this information.

In addition, the site presents Additional materials on fast reading: books and textbooks, videos, simulators and programs, materials for download, as well as articles with comments and feedback from social networks.

Consists of several exercises to be mastered. All exercises "work" independently, but are interconnected by a common idea - a change in attitude to the process of perception and assimilation of information.

Within the framework of one article, it is impossible to reveal the content of all exercises.

Each exercise has a different weighting in increasing reading speed. There are two main exercises that decide the question - how to learn to read quickly.

To monitor your progress, you must immediately start a diary.

At the beginning of the diary, it is necessary to determine and mark the initial one. It is determined by the formula: The number of characters in the text is divided by the time taken to read it in minutes and multiplied by the coefficient of understanding the meaning of what was read.

The coefficient that determines the reading comprehension is determined by analyzing the answers to the questions in the text. Each correct answer is assigned 0.1 point. Correct answers to all 10 questions will be 1 point.

The first entry in the diary will be the first step in deciding how to learn to read quickly.

The first and most difficult exercise is learning how to suppress articulation while reading.

Articulation is the main problem of "speed reading". Suppressing articulation is the most difficult exercise of all.

When performing the exercise, it must be remembered that not only the pronunciation of words (muttering or whispering) is excluded, but new way internal speech. He perceives text only through visual recognition. The components of speech and hearing are completely excluded.

To exclude articulation while reading, one must constantly distract oneself with rhythmic movements of the fingers, counting numbers aloud with any remarks, i.e. in any way you like. The main thing is to distract the inner announcer from repeating aloud the text seen with the eyes.

You can get rid of articulation after 20-25 hours of training. How it will turn out, but do not strive for records, the main thing is to get the desired result.

When the exercise is mastered and the expected result is obtained, i.e. reading without articulation, check your reading speed and write the result in a diary.

Before and after the second exercise, also record your reading speed in a journal.

The essence of the exercise can be illustrated by the example of high-speed typing on a typewriter or PC keyboard. Especially where the keyboard is divided into two parts. In this case, the user works with each hand separately only on "his" part of the keyboard, without duplication.

So it is with reading. Each eye can and should bring "its" part of the printed images to the brain, separately. The eyes look parallel in a common direction, but each one covers only "its" part, not focusing on one central point in the common center.

Due to the parallelism of the gaze, lateral or peripheral vision expands. You can see a large area of text without making unnecessary eye movements. Thus, increasing the speed of "retrieving" information or reading speed.

Having learned to work with expanded peripheral vision, reading speed will increase automatically due to the fact that the brain will always have an "operational stock" of words that have not yet been uttered, but have already been seen with the eyes and transmitted to the brain.

Without a developed peripheral vision, the brain often lacks a reserve of "extra" words for pronouncing them. their eyes did not yet see and did not convey to him.

Everything is simple and complex at the same time. Easy to understand, but difficult to master.

Nevertheless, a conscious desire and persistence will definitely give the expected result.

With an abundance of information in modern world, as well as the constant lack of time, it is very important to learn how to read quickly, because this is the only way to be always aware of everything you need. No matter what field you work in, innovations are constantly appearing, and you definitely need to be aware of the changes. Not to mention the fact that in the absence of fast reading skills, even daily review of correspondence can turn into a long and tedious task.

If your task is to take your time to enjoy reading the classics, rocking in a rocking chair, perhaps increasing the speed is useless, but in all other cases it will definitely not hurt.
Common misconceptions about abbreviations.
To learn to read very quickly, you must first rid your mind of some attitudes that prevent you from even starting. In fact, these are nothing more than myths, but they are quite common. The first of them: to read quickly, you need a special talent and this is not given to everyone. Not true! If you have mastered the ability to read as such, then you can increase your speed. The second one sounds like this: if you have not learned to read well in childhood, it is impossible to do this with age. And also not true. You can master this skill at any age. There would be a desire.
Quantity and quality.
Even in the distant school years the reading technique was higher in those children who read more - not only within the given program, but also simply “for themselves”. And the first rule of anyone who wants to learn to read quickly is to read. And not from a computer screen. Make it a rule to read at least 10-15 pages of a book a day, gradually increasing their number. With constant training, over time, you will already "grasp" the whole words, recognize them faster, and it will take much less time to read. Thus, you will learn to read quickly, even without using special techniques and without various speed reading courses. But to make your classes more effective, some of the techniques are still worth familiarizing yourself with.

Don't read aloud!
Reading aloud, so necessary at the initial stage of learning, now only gets in the way. If you move your lips like school or say every word you read to yourself, you know that it slows down your reading. It is quite obvious that we can catch words many times faster than pronouncing them. Here are some exercises to help you shut up and increase your speed of reading.

  • keep your finger on your lips and watch so that they do not move;
  • press your tongue firmly to your teeth while reading;
  • put on some calm melody while reading (without words, of course!) and follow it while you read.
Down vertically.
Another school habit that spoils the whole thing is sliding your finger along the line, reading every word. Our task is to learn to grasp the whole line with a glance at once, there is no need to carefully read each word in order to understand the meaning of the phrase. The following exercise will help you learn this. We evenly drag our finger down along the text and try to keep up with it. Let it be not a book page for a start, but a newspaper column - it is much narrower. After a while, you will be able to read books as well. To control yourself, you can move not your finger, but a sheet of paper with a "window" cut out, so that 3-4 lines fit into the window. Have time to read them while they are in sight.

Concentration.
Be extremely careful, nothing slows down your reading like having to go back and re-read what has already been read. Moreover, the very thought that you can reread at any moment weakens your attention. Don't let yourself go back. So you get out of rhythm and waste time. Knowing that you can't reread, you will read everything much more attentively.

Look wider.
Reading speed largely depends on how well your peripheral vision is developed (remember, you need to grasp the entire line from beginning to end, looking at its middle). To develop it, do a few simple exercises.

  1. Write in a square the numbers from 1 to 9, randomly arranging them over the entire area, and then, looking in its middle and without taking your eyes off, find the numbers in order. Then complicate the task by increasing the square and the number of numbers.
  2. In any setting, try to grab as many objects as possible with peripheral vision looking straight ahead.
  3. While reading, move your gaze to the window, the angle of view will increase, and again return to the book.
Today is better than yesterday.
Read "for a while" every day and write down your results, try to increase the speed day by day, at least slightly. This will help you read really quickly over time.

Now that you have an idea of how to learn to read quickly, the result depends on only one thing - on daily practice. And if you have sufficient motivation, then with some diligence, you will develop speed reading skills much faster than you think. Expensive speed reading courses are, of course, great, but if you want to learn how to read quickly, you can do it yourself. We wish you success in this necessary endeavor!

Being able to read quickly is not a luxury, but a must-have skill in the modern world. The need for speed reading is not even discussed, but, nevertheless, many people say that reading speed is established in childhood, and if your parents do not try, then you will never learn to read quickly. This is the main myth. You can learn to read quickly at any age. How? I will talk about this in this article.

Do not read aloud

The main problem when reading a text is the pronunciation of words to ourselves, and literally from childhood they "hammer" into our heads something completely different, forcing us to read aloud. To prove that the teachers are wrong, I will cite the following fact: John F. Kennedy, the former president of the United States, had a record for speed reading, but could speak out loud no more than 300 words per minute. Do you need more proof?
Of course, it is easy to say that this is wrong, but how to fix it? To avoid having to say words out loud as you read, do the following exercises.

Exercise "Lip Silence"

  1. Keep your finger on your lips.
  2. Make sure that the lips do not move.
  1. Pinch a pencil or pen with your teeth.
  2. The tongue and lips should not touch the pencil.
Exercise "Lingual pressing"
Press your tongue to your teeth.

Exercise "La-la-la-aloud"
While reading, say out loud any sound combinations (la-la-la, no-no-no) or individual words.

Exercise "La-la-la to myself"
While reading, say some phonetic phrases or individual words to yourself.

Exercise "Fragment"
While reading, say short text... Various tongue twisters, proverbs, aphorisms, poetic phrases will do.

Exercise "Counting"
Count from 1 to 21 as you read.

Exercise "Music"
Listen to soothing music as you read, observing the development of the melody.

Exercise "Behind the Finger"

  1. You need to quickly slide your index finger along a column of newspaper text.
  2. You should try to read the text at the same pace as the movement of your finger.
  3. No need to strive to deeply understand what you read.
  4. You need to read simple texts.

Concentrate on reading

Another problem that slows down the development of speed reading is the return to the already read part of the text. As long as you return to the words you read, you are wasting valuable time, and the meaning of one word in the text does not matter much.

Exercise "Concentration"
When you read a text, returning to what you have read, you make your brain think that you can return at any time, so the overall concentration drops. In this regard, MirSovetov recommends reading everything with the thought that you cannot return, and even if you do not understand something, in no case return to what you have read. Do not go off the set rhythm - and the level of understanding will increase.

Exercise "No Limit"
When reading, constantly exceed your own speed limits: read a page in a minute, then in half a minute, and so on.

Expand your angle of view

As you read my article, you have already seen that I condemn the school system of teaching reading, but it is not only about reading aloud. Another important point in reading, instilled in us since childhood, is driving your finger along the lines. The idea is initially "rotten", since it does not contribute to an increase in reading speed in any way. Can a piece of flesh and blood compete with our thinking, the speed of thought? Of course not. The eyes of a misreading person move evenly, but they constantly stop and only then begin to move. This is the wrong education! Our finger cannot instantly jump from line to line, it takes time! And because of this time, our and the overall reading speed decreases!

Exercise "Poems"

  1. Find a poem with short lines.
  2. Read one line at a time, focusing your eyes on the extreme words.
  3. Gradually pick up poems with longer lines.
Exercise "Windows"
  1. Consider the wide-open panorama outside the window.
  2. Move your gaze to the text, adjusting your eyes along the edges of the lines of text: the sector of the operative field narrows, it needs to be enlarged again and again.
  3. Repeat these steps several times.
  1. Read the text of a newspaper column, accompanying the reading with four fingers, quickly moving them from top to bottom.
  2. Do the same with three, two and one fingers.
Exercise "Again the window"
  1. Go to the window through which you have already looked (exercise "Window").
  2. Move your gaze from the panorama outside the window to the text: the sector of vision narrows - expand it, repeating over and over again.
Exercise "Films-leaves"
  1. Prepare several cardboard sheets with a slot for two, three or more lines of a newspaper column or strips of colored plastic film of the appropriate width.
  2. Read the text by quickly moving the frame or strip, with one glance covering the entire surrounding text fragment.
Find a Number Exercise
  1. Draw a 3x3 square on paper and randomly arrange the numbers from 1 to 9.
  2. Looking at the center of the square, without taking your eyes, look for other numbers in order.
  3. Increase the square to 4x4 (numbers 1-16), up to 5x5 (1-25).
Exercise "Dictionaries"
  1. Take a spelling, antonymic, synonymous, Russian-foreign or other similar dictionary.
  2. Read words as quickly as possible, recognizing several words at a time per second.
Exercise "First and Last"
  1. Turn on the music.
  2. Read quickly the first and the last word on each line without reading any other words.
Exercise "Vehicle numbers"
  1. Walking along the streets, instantly "take away" with a glance the numbers of parked or passing cars.
  2. Looking around, also "catch" the highlighted words on any signs and announcements.
Exercise "Wherever, Whenever"
  1. Expand your field of view anytime, anywhere.
  2. Without moving your pupils, see as many objects as possible from all sides (bottom, top, left, right).
Exercise "Numbers, letters, phrases"
  1. Write "with a glance" the numbers from 0 to 33.
  2. Also write all the letters of the alphabet.
  3. Write a few phrases or phrases.
Now you know how you can develop your speed reading skills. And MirSovetov will only wish you good luck in this difficult, but, of course, very necessary business!

Today, the technique of fast reading has become extremely popular. And it is not surprising, because the skill to read quickly and understand what has been read is required for people of any profession. Anyone can develop this ability in themselves if they use the fast reading method.

The speed reading technique includes several stages. But the main thing in mastering this technique is a person's motivation and self-esteem. That is, in order for the speed reading technique to be successfully applied in practice, the student must understand why he sets this goal for himself. It is also extremely important that in the mind of someone who wants to learn to read very quickly, the thought is deposited that everything is achievable and almost everyone should succeed.

The fast reading technique includes the principle of "sighting". It consists in the fact that a person develops the ability in a few seconds by instant viewing to select in the text only those passages that should be paid special attention to, having eliminated already known material. That is, in order to learn to read very quickly, you need to be able to highlight unfamiliar information with a second look.

The exercise will be performed correctly if the student understands its essence, checking his ability to highlight the main thing first on the subjects. This is done like this: for a few seconds you need to closely examine an object. Then, closing your eyes, imagine him in all the little things.

Opening your eyes, you should note to yourself the difference between the visual representation of this object and the real image. Having selected 3 previously unnoticed features in the object, you should again close your eyes and again imagine the object. The picture will now be more complete. This exercise is done up to 7 times - it develops attention and the ability to highlight the main thing.

The speed reading technique includes exercises similar to the one described: Having quickly looked through the text (but you do not need to read it!) For 30 seconds, you should highlight the 3 main thoughts of the passage. Closing your eyes, you need to imagine these thoughts. Then the method is repeated 4 more times, but each time you should find new thoughts and facts by visualizing them.

Keyword finding method

But how to learn not only to read quickly, but also? For this, there are exercises to find keywords in the text. This method can be jokingly called "Read through the word."

That is, before reading, you should decide on the subject of the text and, looking over the material, "cling" only those words together with the adjacent passages that are relevant to the topic.

Suppress articulation

Since everyone can learn to read quickly and independently, you should just regularly conduct necessary exercises... One of the main "inhibiting" moments of reading is the skill of people to pronounce the text to themselves. We even mentally articulate! And all this takes time. Therefore, in order to learn to read very quickly, you must develop the skill to suppress articulation. And exercises for developing fast reading skills will be as follows:

  • Mentally count while reading.
  • Tapping with your fingers while reading a familiar rhythmic pattern, for example, tam-tararam-tam-tararam.

Visual memory skill

Learning to read very quickly is impossible if you use the literal reading method. By the way, today even in primary school many methodologists try to abandon this method at an early stage of training. They are trying to teach kids to memorize syllables, whole four and five-letter words. And adults have a more developed memory, so they should learn to grasp (and not spell out!) Words consisting of 9, 10 or more letters.

Learning how to read long words using visual memory is not at all difficult if you do the necessary exercises every day. Plates should be prepared with printed long words, most often found in texts (or purely professional). You can create pictures in computer programs with printed words. The tablet can contain 2-3 words or even more. These exercises consist in the fact that the student should only look at the plate, but not read the word, close his eyes (or remove the picture from the monitor) and say what is written.

You can start these exercises with words containing 6-7 letters, gradually complicating the task. Since it is impossible to learn to read very quickly in an instant, you should devote at least 15 minutes to each exercise daily.

Vertical reading training

It is impossible to master speed reading if you do not learn to read vertically. That is, you should "teach your eyes" not to move along the line, but to cover the entire line with one glance. There are special developments for the development and improvement of this skill - Schulte exercises.

This method is based on the use of square lined tables with numbers in them in any order. You need to start the exercises with a 16-digit table, then gradually move to 25, 36, 49 digits. The tables differ from each other in the arrangement of numbers, so it will be better if someone else will cook them. It is convenient to engage in the development of speed reading skills together, then the signs can easily be changed.

The main method of speed reading is to see the entire page at once, without focusing on the little things. Therefore, when working with tables, you should look clearly at one point located in the center of the table.

Features of brain activity

"Confused Letters"

Since learning to speed reading at home on your own is most convenient for two people, some interesting, to some extent even creative, exercises will be very appropriate.

The speed reading technique is based on the specific features of the work of the human brain, discovered relatively recently. It turns out that the brain perceives best not literal reading, but vocabulary... Moreover, the letters in words may not be in the usual order, but arbitrarily, the main thing is that the first and last letter does not change its place.

You can use this feature to read quickly with the following exercise. Both students prepare texts for each other, in which they rearrange the letters within the words. Then they change passages and check each other's reading.

"Crossed out letters"

Exercises to cross out letters within words are also great for developing fast reading skills. Both students also prepare assignments for each other, removing almost half of the letters from the text, for example, all vowels. You can even arrange a competition for a time, determining with the help of a stopwatch how quickly your partner can read such a text.

Reading through a word

Such exercises contribute not only to the acquisition of speed reading skills, but also stimulate the brain, giving it training and developing the intellectual abilities of a person. The skill of fast reading is acquired if you know how you can quickly read the text, “without getting hung up” on each specific word, that is, through the word.

The exercises for developing this skill are also simple. You must first prepare the material: a text with crossed out (erased) words, for example, first remove every third word, then move on to exercises in which every second word is removed.

Assault technique - competition

You need to take two texts or different passages from one and the same and take turns reading for a while, followed by retelling.
