Gaijin games. Silent Thunder: a new game from Gaijin Entertainment

The largest Russian developer and publisher is 15 years old. We read old reviews, we laugh, we are horrified - and we are nostalgic.

An agronomist, outer space, a gang of blacks, bullet holes on the wings of an IL-2, fire-breathing monsters, anime, fighting carts made of garbage, helicopters over Africa, Volkodav and Po-2. What unites all these things?

I will answer with an excerpt from a non-existent dictionary:

外人 (がいじん, "gaijin")
1) a foreigner;
2) a person from the outside.
...
42) in pl. h. — the largest independent game developer in Russia (Gaijin Entertainment).

In 2002, the brothers Anton and Kirill Yudintsev, together with Alexei Volynskov (before that, he worked, for example, on Doom 2D) founded a company Gaijin Entertainment. They started out modestly: as game developers for digital cable TV boxes. But that wasn't the end of their ambitions...

Ready for time travel? Let's see what the brainchild of the Yudintsevs and Volynsky has achieved in fifteen years.

Long road to war

2003: Gaijin Entertainment has its first "big" game: " Boomer: Torn Towers. It looks like a sequel to the movie, but it really isn't. We wrote about the project: “This is the real and undisguised trash of domestic bottling. Whether it’s good or bad, it’s not for us to judge anymore ”(next, so that you understand - reviews on Apocalyptica and the last game Bioniclam»).

2005: Racing comes out" adrenaline show» and action « Zhmurki based on the film of the same name. We wrote about the first game like this: “The group race of monkeys with grenades was undoubtedly a success. Surprisingly, Adrenaline Show turned out to be exactly the kind of game we expected: fun, dynamic, and sometimes even original.” About the second - like this: "Zhmurok" has one strong point - this game is addictive. Tightens with the same thing that tightened alien shooter and Crimsonland, simple yet fun and meaty gameplay."

2006: " The Brotherhood and the Ring". The game, which loosely retells the events of The Lord of the Rings, puzzled us: “It is absolutely unclear from what positions the offspring of Gaijin Entertainment should be judged. On the one hand, it is obvious that the farce going on in the "Brotherhood and the Ring" will bring some educated person to the point of affect. On the other hand, this misunderstanding has sane gameplay, a bunch of videos of digestible quality and seemingly funny (for a certain category of citizens) texts.

In the same year, the studio released unsuccessful " wolfhound" and " Section 78».

2007: " Adrenaline 2: Rush Hour". According to our assessment - "an exciting, but uneven game. With a stupid plot and aliens on the sidewalks, but with a pleasant gameplay, an epochal selection of music and an abundance of delicious interviews. To play or not to play? Rather, play!”.

In the same year - "the first Russian anime game" Onyblade". Our verdict: “If you like fun and easy arcade games, then you should pay attention to Oneblade. The combat system is very enjoyable, and there are more than enough enemies to try it out on. Well, if you get bored before you pass, then you can always quit.

2008: an add-on for the Gaijin Ent racing series appeared on the shelves - Adrenaline 2: Anarchy". Nothing has changed globally in the game - except for one moment. In multiplayer, it became possible ... to fly and shoot at opponents with homing missiles. Do I need to add something?

2009: came out " Two broken towers”, a direct continuation of the “Brotherhood and the Ring” with the same Goblin. We wrote briefly: "The best review of "Two Torn Towers" is its cover: with gouged-out flowers, heroes painted as homosexuals and the inscription "Funny game from Goblin" carved in gold." Funny or not, everyone decides for himself. The Goblin himself, for example, liked it.”

In the same year - the first big success, wonderful " IL-2 Sturmovik: Winged Predators". Wait a minute, the game is still in the top 10 flight sims on GameRankings.com. We wrote about this project: “From the point of view of the simulator, the new IL-2: Sturmovik is made simply flawlessly - it is a beautiful and realistic game, with a high-quality campaign and various difficulty settings.”

2010: Apache: Air Assault, an unexpected game in the seemingly dead genre of helicopter simulators - and again good luck. It seemed that the Gaijins had finally found their niche. Our verdict: "A high-quality and entertaining helicopter simulator that lacks a little bit of Hollywood gloss and at least some plot."

But no. Even having found a gold mine, "Snails" stubbornly mastered new sites. In the same 2010 they released mobile game Braveheart. At the KRI-2011 it will be named "Best Game for Portable Platforms".

2011: important news. Judge for yourself: “On April 1, the Russian studio Gaijin Entertainment announced an online aerial action World of Planes. Many gamers thought it was just a joke, a parody of the game World of Tanks. However, it turned out that World of Planes is a real-life project, the development of which has been going on for two years.

2012: Gaijin Entertainment is ten years old, but the company does not even think to slow down. She has several notable projects coming out at once.

Time: flight simulator Birds of Steel(“a high-quality and still unique simulator of its kind). Now the main thing for Gaijin is not to stop there.”

Two: Another Anime Action Blades of Time(“the game is noticeably better than Oneblade, it has good ideas and the beginnings of an excellent combat system, with magic, shooting and melee weapons "- and this is against the backdrop of a brilliant Bayonetta and not bad Enslaved: Odyssey to the West).

And finally three: War Thunder , reborn World of Planes. The game immediately struck with ambition: the developers intended to combine in one project immediately and aircraft, and tanks, and ships. And all this - in three modes, so that both beginners and veterans of the simulation genre can play. We chuckled incredulously and went to try out the early version, which had only planes (but under three hundred models!). In the end, we were impressed and concluded: “War Thunder is an adrenaline-fueled Quake for fans of aerial shooters... The Napoleonic designs of Gaijin studio hint that Wargaming.net there is a serious contender."

In the same year, "Gaijins" were released into MBT Star Conflict from Targem Gamesmore one ambitious network project, now about battles in space. Subsequently, we gave the game 7.5 points with peace of mind; our verdict - "the session "War Thunder about space" was quite a success." What is especially funny here is that at that moment we were comparing Star Conflict with EVE and Star Citizen, which was about to appear on the shelves. Everything is clear with EVE, but Star Citizen... oh, where is our 2012!

For Gaijin Entertainment, Star Conflict was the first experience as a publisher. Later, the tireless Gaijins used this experience to launch another big game from Targem Games, Crossout, - and now they are also working in this capacity on a shooter Enlisted.

But back to their own developments.

2013: work on War Thunder was in full swing. We were one of the first to look at the early ground version: “Tanks fit into the game like natives, and soon enough the fleet will also appear in the game. What it will look like and what tasks it will perform... for now, shhh, not a word to anyone! But we will be the first to tell you about battles on the water” (how optimistic we were!).

And back in December, the “Great December Revolution” took place on the official forum of the game: arcade fans were able to recapture their regime from representatives of the hardcore elite, who shortly before that had achieved a complication of the arcade flight model. Then, in disputes, many spears were broken, and representatives of both sides more than once predicted a quick death for the game - they say, "if it is your way, then ...". But four years have passed, and the game is more alive than all the living.

In the same 2013, War Thunder began to collect awards. It has (more than rightly) been called "the best simulation game ever gamescom 2013". And with KRI Gaijin, thanks to their military-historical project, they took away four awards at once: the best development company, Best game, best technology as well as the best sound design. Well, just for the record, add here two Guinness records: "The largest number of aircraft in a flight simulator" (303) and "The largest number of players on a flight simulator server" (71,502). It's no surprise that in the "Results of the Year" we named War Thunder "Breakthrough of the Year" in our magazine.

Do you think the "Gaijins" have calmed down on this? Keep your pocket wide! They stopped releasing smaller games, but the very next year, the ground game reached the hangars of ordinary players. And there it went: the version on PlayStation, Linux and macOS, British tanks, vehicles with ATGMs, ships (alas, so far only in CBT), Japanese armored vehicles, Italian aircraft, post-war tanks and French aircraft! At some point, it seems that everything, there is nothing more to surprise, and then the developers begin to talk about, for example, the world war.

Interview with Mir 3D Anton Yudintsev said: “Gaijin is a stranger only for the Japanese, for whom we are all strangers... The name of our company hints at our vision. We believe that all our games should have their own audience. A game doesn't have to be a 'hit for everyone', it just needs to be a 'masterpiece for many'."

You can treat the flagship project of this company or their old games as you like. But facts are facts. In fifteen years, the developers of Gaijin Entertainment have gone through a hell of a a long way. Before finding their niche, they tried many recipes, stepped on a variety of rakes ... and ultimately achieved two important things.

Raz: they have become a company that is known all over the world.

Two: they still make or support large and complex projects in the Russian market, which is hopelessly buried in endless mobile entertainment and simple shareware games. And, in spite of everything, they stubbornly lead War Thunder forward (we can only hope that to a happy future).

Happy birthday Gaijin Entertainment! And instead of a formal congratulations, let the wonderful poet of the 18th century Kobayashi Issa speak for us:

Quietly creep,
Snail, down the slope of Fuji
Up to the very heights!

(translated by V. Markova)

The Russian developer company, unlike its other competitors, is engaged not only in the development and publication of video games. The key feature of the studio is that the company's employees are constantly working on improving the technologies themselves to create computer games. The end result of such innovations is implemented not only in their own projects, but also used by other development companies.

Gaijin Entertainment was founded by brothers Anton and Kirill Yudintsev together with Alexey Volynskov in 2002 in Moscow. It was originally planned to release games exclusively for PC users. It was soon decided to adjust plans.

The technical director of Gaijin Entertainment does not have the appropriate education. Before forming a company with the Yudintsevs, he was programming exclusively as a hobby.

Today, in addition to numerous projects for PC, Gaijin Entertainment produces video games for consoles from Sony and Microsoft, as well as mobile applications for smartphones on operating system Android.

In the future, it is planned to expand again and start developing or porting applications for iOS. The most popular games that Gaijin Entertainment had to work on are: Flight Fancy, War Thunder and Adrenaline Show.

Silent Thunder is ours new game dedicated to the battles of submarines. New project made on the game engine Dagor Engine 5.0, which we released in update 1.77. First session open testing underwater battles will take place today - right in War Thunder!

The test session of underwater battles is available in the "Events and Tournaments" menu from March 31 from 15:00 (UTC) to April 3, 15:00 (UTC).

Silent Thunder is a multiplayer game about modern submarines, where the player gets the latest models of military equipment and weapons: sonars, anti-torpedo traps, cruise and ballistic missiles, guided torpedoes. In the dark, under the water column, you have to calculate the location of your opponents with the help of sonar, while at the same time trying to maintain your incognito. Any noise can give away the location of the submarine. Therefore, if you use active sonar, hit a rock or fire a torpedo, the environment will require you to double your attention!

Silent Thunder will be tested on a location created based on the waters of the island of Svalbard. Here, a battle of nuclear submarines will take place for control over a strategically important zone, after the capture of which one of the teams launches cruise or ballistic missiles. To test underwater battles, players are waiting for nuclear submarines of the three strongest maritime powers. The nuclear submarine of the Yasen project is one of the most modern submarines in service with the Russian Navy. armed with “Physicist” guided torpedoes and formidable “Caliber” cruise missiles. The American multi-purpose atomic bomber carries the legendary Tomahawks with powerful high-explosive and nuclear warheads in its missile silos. British nuclear submarines of the project are the only carrier of British ballistic nuclear missiles, and their high-speed guided torpedoes weighing two tons each confidently destroy any enemy at sea.
