The Swiss Guard is one of the oldest and smallest armies in the world. During its long history, the number of the corps rarely exceeded one hundred people, but the most interesting thing is that the Swiss Guard does not serve Switzerland, but a completely different state - the Vatican.

We were lucky during our visit to the Vatican - the guards were in full dress, which is called Gala, and looks probably the most unusual among all the uniforms of the modern armed forces:

Swiss Guard (full name - lat. Cohors pedestris Helvetiorum a sacra custodia Pontificis - The Pope's Sacred Guard Swiss Infantry Cohort) is not easy military establishment The Vatican, and one of the oldest armies in the world that has survived to this day, and the smallest army on the planet.

In 1506, Pope Julius II, known for his military campaigns, asked Switzerland to send soldiers to defend the borders of the Vatican. Even then, the Swiss were known as excellent soldiers, but the Pontiff was able to verify this personally. Hiding in France and fighting for the papal throne, the future Pontiff persuaded Charles VIII to make a military campaign against Naples. Having a militant character, Julius II himself joined the ranks of the Swiss guards of the French king. Becoming Pontiff, he invited to the service those with whom he fought shoulder to shoulder.

The chroniclers of those years spoke of the Swiss in battle in the following way: “It was not a battle, but simply a massive massacre of Austrian soldiers; the mountaineers killed them like sheep in a slaughterhouse; they did not spare anyone, they exterminated without distinction every one of them, until no one was left. " Indeed, the "Shvis" (the contemptuous nickname of the Swiss mercenaries among the Europeans) did not spare anyone. They did not take prisoners and were ready to kill even their comrades-in-arms in case of escape.

There was another feature that set the Swiss apart from other mercenaries - they were distinguished by their loyalty.

The Vatican Swiss Guard participated in hostilities only once, in 1527 during the capture and sack of Rome by the troops of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Pope Clement VII owes his salvation to the guards. In 1527, 147 guardsmen were killed defending the pope. On May 6, in memory of this event, the new recruits of the Guard are sworn in.

Since then, the Vatican has been guarded exclusively by the Swiss. Much later, when the fascist troops entered Rome, the guardsmen did not leave their posts and took up a perimeter defense. The command of the Wehrmacht ordered the troops not to occupy the Vatican, and not a single German soldier entered its territory.

The costumes for the Swiss Guard were invented by the tailor Jules Repon, commissioned by Benedict XV in 1914. He was inspired by one of the images of Raphael, which had similar elements. The tailor created a Renaissance costume, removing the fancy hats, and chose a black beret for the main headdress. Every Swiss Guardsman has a casual and dress uniform.

The dress uniform is called "gala", it exists in two versions: gala and grand gala - "large dress uniform". The grand gala is worn during special ceremonies. It is a full dress uniform, complemented by a cuirass and a white-metal morion helmet with a red plume, consists of 154 pieces and weighs over 8 pounds - not the lightest dress attire.

There is also a legend that the uniform of the guardsmen was sewn according to the drawings of Michelangelo. However, there is no historical evidence for this.

St. Peter's Cathedral is one of the entrances to the Vatican:

Today, the guards are one of the Vatican's calling cards. And although many believe that they are just a folklore division, this is not the case. Of course, not a single solemn and diplomatic ceremony is complete without them, but this is only a small fraction of their service. The main purpose of the guard - the protection of the pontiff - remained unchanged. As written in the statute, they serve "to ensure the safety of the pope's holy person and his residence."

Windows of the papal chambers:

Guards guard the entrances to the Vatican, the Pope's quarters and Secretary of State, control access to the city-state, issue background information pilgrims.

At the Pope's public exits, they provide his personal protection, being always nearby. At the same time, since the attempt on the life of John Paul II in 1981, they have been supported by employees of the Italian special services. When there are no services on the square and, accordingly, the Pope is not present either, the guards do not show up and Italian carabinieri keep order in front of the cathedral.

MOSCOW, January 3 - RIA Novosti, Andrey Kots... The five countries with the most numerous and well-equipped armed forces will be named by almost everyone who is even slightly interested military theme... Meanwhile, there are enough states on the planet with much more compact armies. About the smallest armed forces in the world - in the material RIA Novosti.

San marino

The army of the Republic of San Marino numbers somewhere between 75-100 people. For an area of 61 square kilometers, this is even a bit much. The whole country is surrounded by Italy and is under the protectorate of Rome. The main military contingent of the dwarf state is the palace guard corps, whose duties include guarding the Republican Palace, patrolling the borders and assisting the police. The conscription in San Marino was abandoned long ago, the service is a purely voluntary matter.

Since San Marino is not a member of NATO and other military blocs, the army is used exclusively in ceremonial events associated with national holidays and meetings of foreign government delegations. The honor guard is armed with Austrian Glock pistols of various models, as well as Italian Beretta BM59 rifles of the 1959 model. Armored vehicles are absent, and ordinary off-road vehicles are used for the rapid transfer of troops. There is no air force either.

Despite the modest army, the republic took part in the wars on several occasions. For example, in the First World War, she sided with the Entente and allocated 15 soldiers to participate in hostilities. During the Second World War, despite the declared neutrality by the authorities, the Germans occupied San Marino. The British Air Force regularly raided the Nazis stationed here. There were also casualties among the civilian population.

Vatican

The proverb "not by number, but by skill" is the best fit for the Armed Forces of the Vatican, represented by the Swiss Guards Corps, numbering 110 soldiers. This unit is responsible for the safety of the Pope and is staffed by experienced and well-trained fighters. The personnel are only Swiss citizens and only Catholics. The official language of the Guard is German. The main functions are to carry out guard duty at the entrance to the Vatican, on all floors of the Apostolic Palace, at the chambers of the Pope and the Secretary of State. Not a single solemn mass in St. Peter's Cathedral, not a single audience or diplomatic reception can do without the guards.

Weapons from the arsenal of the guardsmen were repeatedly withdrawn, but then returned. IN last time- after the assassination attempt on John Paul II on May 13, 1981. The Guards Corps is armed with SIGSauer P220 and Glock 19 pistols, Heckler & Koch MP5A3 submachine guns and SIGSG 550 assault rifles. In which case the city-state will always be covered by Italy.

Antigua and Barbuda

The Armed Forces of the tiny Caribbean state of Antigua and Barbuda have only 170 people under arms. The Ground Forces consist of one battalion and are responsible for internal security along with the local police.

The kingdom's army was also involved in international operations. In particular, 14 soldiers participated in the invasion of Grenada on October 25, 1983 under the command of the United States. And in 1995, the royal soldiers under Operation Support for Democracy were operating in Haiti when the Americans invaded the island to return to power the legitimate president, overthrown by a military junta.

There is also a coast guard in the kingdom, where about 50 people serve. Their responsibility is to suppress drug trafficking, ensure the safety of fishing, as well as fight against illegal migration.

Seychelles

Seychelles, with a population of 90,000, is holding 450 troops under arms. We have our own Air Force: five turboprop aircraft - two Chinese Y-12s, two German Dornier 228s and one Canadian DHC-6 Twin Otter.

The navy is represented by several patrol boats and two old Type-062 gunboats transferred to the Seychelles by China and the UAE. These boats are even equipped with artillery - 57mm cannons. In addition, the Navy includes an 80-man Marine Corps unit.

The Barbados Coast Guard is 110 troops and six American-made light patrol boats. Also on the territory of this state is the headquarters of the regional security forces of the Caribbean. He is mainly responsible for the fight against drug trafficking and the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters.

If the world were perfect, then no armies and weapons were needed and there would never be wars. But the reality is that threats both abroad and within the state put national security at risk. This reality forces many states to have a powerful army in the form of human potential and weapons.
There are several outstanding armies that are widely known for their size, combat experience and military technology. They are among the ten largest armies in the world.

1. China

The number one army in the world is unsurprisingly occupied by the most populous country in the world, the People's Army of China. This nation is known not only for its large territory, but also for its huge population and, accordingly, the largest army. The Chinese People's Liberation Army was founded in 1927.

Its main body consists of citizens between the ages of 18 and 49. The number of people is 2,300,000. The budget is $ 129 billion per year. About 240 nuclear missile launchers. The Chinese army is well trained and having large weapons and mobilization resources in the event of a war can put 200,000,000 people under arms. 6. South Korea

South Korean Army Photo

Next on the list of the largest armies in the world is the South Korean Army. In this state, the draft age is from 18 to 35 years old, the service life is 21 months.

7. Pakistan

Pakistani army

The Air Force is armed with 1,531 aircraft and 589 helicopters. The naval force consists of 11 frigates and 8 submarines. With a budget of just over $ 5 billion, this is the smallest budget of the top 10 military powers. Pakistan may be a small country in size, but it is undoubtedly one of the largest armies in the world in terms of size and military prowess. Also, this army is a permanent ally of the United States.

Iranian army

It is said that the most powerful army in the Middle East is that of Iran. Iran is also known for its large troop numbers. The army is equipped with the latest technology and is armed with 3870 tanks, 1,775 armored vehicles, 706 self-propelled guns, 350 towed artillery pieces, and 48 air defense systems.

Not all countries in the world need a large army for reliable protection. However, maintaining peace and order would not have been possible without a well-organized and armed army.

The Russian army entered the top three strongest in the world, in the Credit Suisse rating, the Russian military is assessed along with the armies of China and the United States. What is the real balance of power among states that are ready for military conflicts?Medialeaks publishes a list of the 20 most powerful armies in the world according to the organization.

At the end of September, the financial organization published a report in which it indicated the TOP-20 of the most powerful armies in the world. Based on this graph, our publication made a detailed list and added its comments.

When compiling the rating, such parameters as the budget, the size of the army, the number of tanks, aircraft, combat helicopters, aircraft carriers and submarines, partly the presence nuclear weapons... The technical level of weapons influenced the position on the list to a lesser extent, and the real combat capability of a particular army was practically not evaluated.

Thus, the assessment of the situation in some countries may raise questions. Let's say the Israeli army yields to Egypt two positions, mainly due to the number of employees and tanks. However, in all clashes, the first won an unconditional victory over the second, despite the numerical superiority.

It is interesting to note that none of the countries were included in the list. Latin America... So, for example, despite the size of the population and economy, the military doctrine of Brazil does not imply serious external or internal threats, so spending on the army in this country is only about 1% of GDP.

It is also somewhat strange that Iran, with its half a million soldiers, 1,500 tanks and 300 combat aircraft, was not included in the list.

20.Canada

Budget: $ 15.7 billion
The number of the army in the field: 22 thousand

19. Indonesia

Budget: $ 6.9 billion
The number of the army in the field: 476 thousand
Tanks: 468
Aviation: 405
Subs: 2

Indonesia was on the list due to the large number of military personnel and the noticeable size of the tank group, but for the island country it lacks naval forces: in particular, there are no aircraft carriers, only two diesel submarines are in service.

18.Germany

Budget: $ 40.2 billion
The number of the army in the field: 179 thousand
Tanks: 408
Aviation: 663
Subs: 4

After World War II, Germany did not have its own army for 10 years. During the confrontation between the West and the USSR, the Bundeswehr numbered up to half a million people, but after unification, the country's authorities abandoned the doctrine of confrontation and sharply reduced investment in defense. Apparently, therefore, in the Credit Suisse rating, the German Armed Forces were even behind Poland. At the same time, Berlin is actively sponsoring its eastern NATO allies.

17.Poland

Budget: $ 9.4 billion
The number of the army in the field: 120 thousand
Tanks: 1 009
Aviation: 467
Subs: 5

Poland has outstripped its western neighbor in military power due to the greater number of tanks and submarines, although the last 300 years the Polish Army has lost in most military conflicts. Be that as it may, Warsaw increased spending on the army after the annexation of Crimea to Russia and the outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

16. Thailand

The number of the army in the field: 306 thousand
Tanks: 722

The number of the army in the field: 58 thousand
Tanks: 59
Aviation: 408
Subs: 6

The defense forces are formed on a professional basis, the army is technically well equipped, there is a modern fleet and a large number of combat helicopters.

14. Israel

Budget: $ 17 billion
The number of the army in the field: 160 thousand
Tanks: 4 170
Aviation: 684
Subs: 5

Israel is the most underrated member of the ranking. The IDF won all the conflicts in which it participated, moreover, sometimes the Israelis had to fight on several fronts against an enemy many times superior in number. In addition to a huge amount of the latest offensive and defensive weapons of its own design, Credit Suisse's analysis does not take into account the fact that there are several hundred thousand reservists with combat experience and high motivation in the country. The visiting card of the IDF is female military personnel who have proven that the weaker sex with a submachine gun is no less effective than the strong. Not to mention the fact that according to unverified data, Israel is armed with about 80 nuclear warheads.

13. Taiwan

Budget: $ 10.7 billion
The number of the army in the field: 290 thousand
Tanks: 2,005
Aviation: 804
Subs: 4

The authorities of the Republic of China believe that they are the legitimate government of the Celestial Empire and sooner or later they must return to Beijing, and until this happens, the army is always ready for an invasion of usurpers from the mainland. And although in reality the armed forces of the island will hardly be able to withstand the army of the PRC, two thousand modern tanks and 800 aircraft and helicopters make it a serious force.

12. Egypt

Budget: $ 4.4 billion
The number of the army in the field: 468 thousand
Tanks: 4 624
Aviation: 1 107
Subs: 4

The Egyptian army was in the ranking due to the number and quantity of equipment, although, as the Yom Kippur War showed, even a threefold superiority in tanks is leveled by high combat skills and technical level of weapons. At the same time, it is known that about a thousand "Abrams" of the Egyptian Armed Forces are simply mothballed in warehouses. Nevertheless, Cairo will acquire two Mistral-class helicopter carriers not supplied by France to the Russian Federation, and about 50 Ka-52 combat helicopters for them, which will make Egypt really serious military force in the region.

11. Pakistan

Budget: $ 7 billion
The number of the army in the field: 617 thousand
Tanks: 2 924
Aviation: 914
Subs: 8

The Pakistani army is one of the largest in the world, it has a lot of tanks and aircraft, the United States supports Islamabad with equipment. The main threat is internal, in the hard-to-reach areas of the country are ruled by local leaders and the Taliban. In addition, Pakistan has not reached an agreement on the borders with India: the territories of the states of Jammu and Kashmir remain disputed, formally the countries are in a state of conflict, in which they are conducting an arms race. Pakistan has medium-range ballistic missiles and about a hundred nuclear warheads

10.Turkey

Budget: $ 18.2 billion
The number of the army in the field: 410 thousand
Tanks: 3 778
Aviation: 1,020

9.UK

Tanks: 407
Aviation: 936

Her Majesty's fleet includes several atomic submarines with strategic nuclear weapons: a total of about 200 warheads. By 2020, it is planned to commission the aircraft carrier "Queen Elizabeth", which will be able to carry 40 F-35B fighters.

8.Italy

Budget: $ 34 billion
The number of the army in the field: 320 thousand
Tanks: 586
Aviation: 760
Subs: 6

7. South Korea

Budget: $ 62.3 billion
The number of the army in the field: 624 thousand
Tanks: 2 381
Aviation: 1,412
Subs: 13

South Korea retains numerous armed forces, although in terms of quantitative indicators in everything except aviation, it continues to lose to its main potential adversary, the DPRK. The difference is, of course, in the technological level. Seoul has its latest and western developments, Pyongyang has 50-year-old Soviet technology.

6. France

Budget: $ 62.3 billion
The number of the army in the field: 202 thousand
Tanks: 423
Aviation: 1,264

5. India

Budget: $ 41.6 billion
The number of the army in the field: 247 thousand
Tanks: 678
Aviation: 1,613
Subs: 16

The most unexpected thing in the ranking is Japan's 4th place, despite the fact that formally the country cannot have an army, but only self-defense forces. Business Insider attributes this to high level equipping the Japanese Armed Forces. In addition, they include 4 helicopter carriers and 9 destroyers. At the same time, Japan does not have nuclear weapons and this, together with a small number of tanks, makes one think that the position of this army is greatly overestimated.

3. China

Budget: $ 216 billion
Active army size: 2.33 million
Tanks: 9,150
Aviation: 2 860
Subs: 67

The second economy in the world has the largest active army, but in terms of the number of tanks, aircraft and helicopters, it is still noticeably inferior not only to the USA, but also to Russia. But the defense budget exceeds the Russian one by 2.5 times. As far as is known, China keeps several hundred nuclear warheads on alert. However, some believe that in reality the PRC may have several thousand warheads, but this information is carefully classified.

2. Russia

Budget: $ 84.5 billion
Active army size: 1 million
Tanks: 15 398
Aviation: 3 429
Subs: 55

Syria has demonstrated once again that Russia rightly continues to hold a solid 2nd place among the strongest, according to Business Insider. The RF Armed Forces are second only to China in the number of submarines. And if the rumors about China's secret nuclear stockpile are not true, it is far ahead of it in this area. It is believed that Russia's strategic nuclear forces comprise about 350 delivery vehicles and about 2,000 nuclear warheads. The number of tactical nuclear charges is unknown and may be several thousand.

1. USA

Budget: $ 601 billion
Active army: 1.4 million
Tanks: 8 848
Aviation: 13 892
Subs: 72

The US military budget is comparable to the previous 19. The navy includes 10 aircraft carriers. It is characteristic that, unlike Moscow, which relied on tanks back in Soviet times, Washington is developing combat aviation. In addition, the American authorities, despite the end Cold war continue to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the development of the latest military technologies, thanks to which the United States remains the leader not only in everything related to the killing of people, but also in the field of, for example, robotics and prosthetics.
