Guide to the Summer Universiade 2017

These competitions have their own anthem, mascot and slogan, but there will be no Russian athletes.

Where and when

From August 19 to 30 in Taipei. Brasilia and Turkish Izmir argued for the right to host the competition. Taiwan is the only country among the applicants where the Universiade has not been held before. In Brazil, student games were held in 1963, and Turkey hosted athletes in 2005. Taipei's bid was approved by the International University Sports Federation on November 29, 2011.

For the capital of the Republic of China, these competitions will generally become the largest and most significant sporting event in the history of the island state. All tickets for the Opening Ceremony, which will take place on August 19, were sold out a month ago.

Sports

For a week and a half, athletes will compete for 275 sets of awards in 22 sports. In addition to the fourteen compulsory events that are presented at each Summer Universiade, eight more have been added by the Organizing Committee. Six of them were previously held at student games: archery, badminton, baseball, golf, taekwondo and weightlifting. Wushu and roller sports will make their debut at the Universiade this year.

Most awards will traditionally be played by representatives of athletics - 50 sets of medals, in swimming, athletes will compete for 42 sets, in taekwondo - for 23 sets.

Symbolism

For the logo of the Universiade, a Chinese character was chosen, which means "north" and is an abbreviation of Taipei. The designer's lines reflect the city's constant pursuit of excellence and innovation. An obligatory element in the logo is five stars, which, like the Olympic rings, represent the five continents.

The official slogan of the competition is “For you. For youth".

The Universiade also has its own mascot - a black bear named Bravo. He was chosen as the mascot via online voting. The white stripes on the chest are made in the shape of the letter V, which means victory. Also, this letter is the ribbon for the bear's gold medal.

Universiade

The Universiade has its own hymn. The lyrics for the song Embrace the World with You were written by the famous Chinese singer Chris Wu. In the composition, in addition to national motifs, the rumba rhythm is used. The song is about friendship and world peace.

Russian team

The University Sports Federation has set a plan for this Universiade of 40 gold medals. Well-known and titled athletes, winners and prize-winners of world championships and Olympic Games will be involved in this task. So, divers Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov, archer Tuyana Dashidzhieva, weightlifter Artem Okulov and others will compete for our team.

Representatives of track and field athletics will not be able to speak at the Universiade. The Russian Student Union was unable to register athletes to participate in the games.

“Our athletes will not perform at the Universiade in any status, so nothing happened. It was planned that 11 people would go there, but we never received any clarification from the International University Sports Federation on how neutral athletes will participate in the competition. It was not clear how to enter them into the database,” Sergey Seiranov, president of the Russian Sports Student Union, told TASS.

08/19/2017 Opening of the Summer Universiade 2017 in Taipei

On August 19, 2017, the twenty-ninth Summer Universiade, the World International Student and Youth Sports Competition, started in the Taiwanese city of Taipei. The solemn opening ceremony of the competition was held at the Arena-Taipei. In the upcoming 11 days of competition, 275 sets of awards will be played.

On August 30, 2017, the XXIX Summer Universiade ended in the Chinese city of Taipei. The closing ceremony of the competition was held at the Taipei Arena, which seats 21,000 spectators. For 11 days of the competition, 275 sets of awards were played.

The Russian national team took fourth place in the team event, having won 25 gold, 31 silver and 38 bronze medals. The leaders of the medal standings at the end of the Universiade were the Japanese, who have 37 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals. The second place went to the team of South Korea (30-22-30), the third place was taken by the host team of Taiwan (26-34-30).

The national team of the Russian Federation was represented at the World Universiade by a delegation of 348 athletes who won a total of 101 medals.

Yulia Bravikova won the most awards for the Russian national team, winning four gold and one silver medal in rhythmic gymnastics competitions. The Russian won the hoop, clubs, ribbon and individual all-around exercises, and took second place in the ball exercises. The Russian rhythmic gymnastics team at the Universiade confirmed its status as the best in the world, winning a total of seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Four gold, three silver and three bronze medals were brought to the treasury of the Russian national team by divers. London Olympic champion Ilya Zakharov won two gold medals at the Universiade: in diving from a three-meter springboard and in synchronized diving from a three-meter springboard paired with Evgeny Kuznetsov. Nikita Shleikher and Roman Izmailov won gold in synchronized platform diving. And the Russian men's team won in Taipei in the team event.

Russians won three golds, two silvers and three bronzes at the Universiade in artistic gymnastics. Daria Spiridonova won the uneven bars, and Kirill Prokopiev became the first in floor exercises. Russian gymnasts also excelled in the team tournament. Russian taekwondo athletes won three gold and bronze medals each in Taipei - Rafail Ayukaev won in the weight category over 87 kg and Boris Krasnov (up to 68 kg). The Russian team was also the first in the men's team competition.

The fencers brought the Russian national team two gold medals: Sergey Bida first won the individual epee competition, and then excelled in the team tournament together with Dmitry Gusev, Alan Fardzinov and Georgy Bruev. Russian foil fencers took three silver and one bronze. Russian swimmers won two golds, five silvers and nine bronzes following their performance at the Universiade. The victory was won by Alexander Sadovnikov in the 100 m butterfly and the women's team in the 4 x 200 m freestyle relay.

Russian judokas won 12 medals at once in Taipei, but not a single gold one: the team has 3 silver and 9 bronze medals. The Russian national team did not perform too well this time in team events. In volleyball, the women's team has gold, and the men's team has silver. The men's water polo team won silver and the female players won bronze medals.

The Russians also missed the awards in athletics, where the Russian team did not perform at the Universiade in the end. 11 people applied for participation in athletics competitions in Taipei, all of them had permission to speak at international starts in a neutral status from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). However, in the end, they did not go to the competitions, since the IAAF and FISU (International University Sports Federation) could not agree that Russian athletes could compete in Taipei under their own flag.

The next World Summer Universiade will be held in 2019 in Naples, Italy.
