Samsung Galaxy A8 or S8 - which is better? Comparison of smartphones. Ease of use The difference between Samsung 8 and

Previously, the most expensive smartphones from Samsung corporation were considered to be Edge devices. The company will no longer be engaged in their release. At the moment, attention is focused on smartphones with the "Plus" prefix. So how will they differ from the "standard" S8?

The first difference, with which I would like to start the article, is the price. The cost of S8 in Russia will be 54,990 rubles. S8 Plus will be more expensive by 5,000 rubles. Of course, this is the price tag at the "start" of sales and later it will be adjusted, but almost certainly (if there are no special sales), the Plus version will always cost more. But whether it is worth overpaying for it and why the “older” version is better than the “younger”, we will now find out.

Technical characteristics of the two new products and the differences between them

CPU

The devices that will be sold on the Russian and European markets are equipped with Exynos 9 Octa 8895 with 3 GHz. In China and the United States, the smartphone will be shipped to the market with the "Snapdragon 835" processor. Both processors have eight cores. They differ in power - some four cores are inferior to others. But this is great, because if all the cores were of the same power, the smartphone would use all its power even to solve elementary tasks.

The central processing unit will be more than 10% faster than the processor found in previous generation smartphones. The power of the graphics accelerator has increased by more than 20%.

These specs apply to both the S8 Plus and the S8. Everything is completely the same here.

RAM

Both models have 4 GB of RAM installed. For the Chinese market, there will be a Galaxy S8 with 6 GB of RAM. Here we note the built-in memory - its volume will be 64 GB. Installation of memory cards up to 256 GB is possible.

Again, full parity.

Battery

And here the first main difference is the battery capacity:

  • The S8 has a 3000mAh battery.
  • And in the Plus version - 3500 mAh.

Interestingly, compared to the "seventh galaxies", the capacity has not only increased, but even dropped by 100 mAh. How does this affect the total operating time ... we'll see.

Camera

Both flagships have an 8MP front camera and a 12MP main camera. The camera can also boast of the f / 1.7 aperture indicator. This indicator does not mean anything to many. But, roughly speaking, while "f / 1.7" is the best that the mobile market has to offer.

Screen

The lateral curvature of the screen is one of the main and well-known smartphones. The screens of both new products are absolutely the same. The only difference is the size.

The Galaxy S8 Plus measures 6.2 inches. In the "regular" version - 5.8 inches. The screen resolution is the same - 2960 by 1440. However, due to the different diagonal, the PPI (number of dots per inch) will differ and show:

  • Galaxy S8 - 570 ppi.
  • Galaxy S8 plus - 529 ppi.

However, it cannot be said that the Plus version's screen is more "grainy". At this resolution, it will be simply impossible to see any differences between the two displays.

Both modern Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is installed.

Other characteristics

All other characteristics are also the same - a charging connector, a 3.5 headphone jack, water and dust resistance, a fingerprint scanner, etc. - all this is present in both Samsung flagships.

Additional differences

In addition to the technical characteristics, it is also worth paying attention to the dimensions of the devices. It is logical that the Plus version has a larger physical size.

  • Galaxy S8 - 148.9mm (long) by 68.1mm (width) by 8.0mm (thickness)
  • Galaxy S8 Plus - 159.5mm x 73.4mm x 8.1mm

Drawing a general conclusion, we get a fun fact - there are only four main differences:

  • Price, but it is not constant :)
  • Display diagonal.
  • Battery capacity.
  • Physical dimensions.

Otherwise, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are exactly the same. What choice should you make? It's up to you to decide, but it seems to us that the “younger model” will be the most successful - after all, compact dimensions, with identical technical characteristics, should “do their job”. And a more adequate price will be another argument for the Galaxy S8. To overpay only for the extra 04 inches of the screen? Dubious pleasure.

P.S. Think differently? Welcome to comments!

Instead of the usual review, we offer you a comparison of the Galaxy S9 against the S8 and iPhone X according to the results in key tests that determine the quality of the user experience.

How autonomous is the smartphone with a 3000 mAh battery? Have the developers managed to create the best screen in terms of sunlight readability, brightness and color accuracy? How fast is the flagship on the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset? Will music lovers be pleased with the sound quality by connecting headphones to the phone or connecting the Galaxy S9 to an external amplifier? A head-to-head comparison of the Galaxy S9, S8, and iPhone X will answer these questions.

Autonomy

In this comparison, we will try to do without a lengthy description of the Galaxy S9 and its specifications. We are sure that the characteristics of the new Korean flagship, the main flagship of the Android Universe, are well known to every Five-Inches reader. If not, you will find a description of the Galaxy S9 in the post dedicated to. Today, fewer words, more action - the test results of the Galaxy S9 and its competitors.

The 3000 mAh battery did not allow for a high autonomy rating, and the Galaxy S9 tests confirmed the not too optimistic predictions. The Galaxy S9 lost out to the S8, but managed to outperform the iPhone X, which has a very modest battery. It should be noted that the battery rating of the Galaxy S9 drops to the critical 50 hours with the Always-On-Display enabled.

The clear advantage of the Galaxy S9 over the iPhone X is support for fast charging. The charger that comes with the phone replenishes 38% of the charge in just 30 minutes. It will take 1 hour and 40 minutes to fully charge the battery from zero to one hundred. For comparison, the iPhone X does not come with fast charging. In half an hour, you can replenish the battery by only 20%. To charge your phone faster, you need to use third-party chargers and adapters.

Screen

The developers managed to resist the temptation to put a screen with the notorious "bangs" in the phone. That alone gives the Galaxy S9 an edge over the iPhone X. But what about the other metrics - brightness, contrast, sunlight readability?

The brightness of the display is high, but the new product practically does not differ from direct competitors. The readability of the display in the sun is excellent, but there is no advantage over last year's flagships either. According to this indicator, the Galaxy S9 lost not only to the iPhone X and Galaxy S8, but also to another flagship with an Amoled display - OnePlus 5T.

Readability factor in the sun

Note the very correct color rendition. The average color accuracy coefficient was 1.9, the maximum was no higher than 3 in all screen modes. By the way, the phone has several pre-installed modes: AMOLED cinema, AMOLED Photo, Basic Screen Mode, Adaptive Display. The latter mode is best for outdoor use on a sunny day.

When comparing the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X for color accuracy, we get absolute parity. Apple's flagship demonstrates the same color accuracy indicators: the average DeltaE was 1.9, the maximum - 2.9. Equality shouldn't come as a surprise, since Cupertinos ordered screens for the iPhone X from Samsung.

Work speed

There is a special material on our site dedicated to the results. Within the framework of this publication, we will restrict ourselves to the key tests of the Samsung Galaxy S9 - Antutu, GeekBench and GFX 3.1.

In GeekBench 4.1, which evaluates the computing power of the central processor, the Samsung Galaxy S9 outperformed its predecessor, but the comparison between the Galaxy S9 and the iPhone ended not in favor of the newcomer. Apple's A11 Bionic CPU remains the leader in this category.

GeekBench 4.1 (multi-core)
GeekBench 4.1 (single-core)

As you would expect, the Samsung Galaxy S9 in Antutu 7 is gaining record scores, at least if we build on last year's flagships. It was surpassed only by the new Sony smartphone - also equipped with the Snapdragon 845 chipset. In working with 3D graphics, the Adreno 630 has no equal, which is clearly demonstrated by the GFX 3.1 benchmark.

Sound quality

The last point of the mini-review is about sound quality. Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9 demonstrates the minimal superiority of the new product - when headphones are connected, harmonic and intermodulation distortions are amplified to a lesser extent. However, the difference is so small that it is almost impossible to notice it by ear.

When comparing the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X, the balance tilts in favor of last year's flagship. Minimal harmonic distortion makes the iPhone X the best audiophile smartphone. However, it should be noted that the iPhone X does not have a 3.5 mm audio jack, and ordinary headphones have to be connected via an adapter. The Galaxy S9 has an audio jack, which is good news.

This concludes the comparison of the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X. If you are interested in the quality of photos from the camera, follow the publications on Five-Inches. A separate article will be devoted to the photographic potential of the novelty.

On September 12, the Apple iPhone X was presented, which is positioned as an ultra-innovative frameless smartphone with support for all kinds of modern technologies. However, in Cupertino, they very immodestly forget that the Samsung Galaxy S8 already has the same.

In fact, the only thing the iPhone X really does seriously outperform its South Korean rival is the six-core mobile platform A11 Bionic. For several years, Apple has been ahead of competitors in terms of processors by a noticeable margin, which the latter are cutting with a delay of six months.

However, if we take the rest of the characteristics, then here the comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Apple iPhone X comes out in most cases far from in favor of the latter. And this applies, it would seem, to the key features of the new "apple", for the sake of which it will be bought.

Large bezel-less screen

The new iPhone X features a large 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with thin bezels and rounded corners. An unusual design feature is the cutout at the top of the screen. Only Android creator Andy Rubin has something similar, but Apple's solution looks more interesting.

However, what appears to be effective from a purely design point of view may not necessarily be comfortable in everyday use. In reality, the available screen area of the Apple iPhone X for launching applications is about 5.5 inches - like the iPhone 7 Plus.

Another thing is the curved screen of the Samsung Galaxy S8, which has both a larger effective area and a higher resolution. In addition, if Apple is taking the first steps towards the transition to AMOLED, then the Koreans have been producing these same matrices for many years.

* In the current firmware version, the function is implemented only for the Home button

As you can see from this table, the Galaxy S8's screen is better than the iPhone X in most cases, including bezel-less (the Coverage parameter, which indicates what percentage of the frontal plane of the smartphone is occupied by the display.

Biometrics

Apple has not been able to implement the idea of embedding a Touch ID fingerprint scanner directly into the screen. However, if Samsung just moved it to the back of the case, then in Cupertino they decided to simply throw out the fingerprint scanner and confine themselves to the Face ID facial recognition function.

However, the latter, despite all the loud statements of the representatives of the "apple" company, managed to glitch right during the presentation *. As expected, Apple did not have time to bring to mind the iPhone X and showed a frankly crude product at the presentation. Not surprisingly, sales won't start until November.

* During the announcement of the Apple iPhone X, facial recognition failed on its first attempt to identify Craig Federini, senior vice president of software development.

Samsung is not doing well in terms of facial recognition either. The first version of the software responsible for this feature turned out to be relatively easy to deceive, but later the company released several updates to improve accuracy and security ().

In addition, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus also have an iris scanner, which the Apple iPhone X does not have in principle. As a result, the owner of any of the latest Samsung flagships has three options for biometric identification to choose from, and the owner of the new "apple" has only one.

So who is the leader after that ?!

Wireless charger

The creators of the Apple iPhone X presented the possibility of fast wireless charging as something extremely innovative, which has not been found anywhere or anyone before. However, top-end Samsung smartphones got one out of the box back in 2015, and for earlier models you can buy a back cover with a special coil.

Samsung Galaxy S8 supports not just wireless charging, it is familiar with two standards at once -. The ability to charge fast over the air has been fine-tuned to the point that it takes just two hours to reach 100%. Apple is clearly lost in time.

Autonomy

For some reason, Apple has not yet indicated the battery capacity, but only demonstrates the benchmark indicators of autonomy in various typical modes of use. Therefore, we will now compare them:

Except for a slight lag in the conversation, the Galaxy S8 outperforms its rival in all other “disciplines”.

Photography

Here, the iPhone X has some opportunity to rehabilitate itself, but this is not at all Apple's merit, Samsung's own lag in terms of the transition to dual cameras (this was received only by the recently released Galaxy Note 8). However, if you do not take the possibility of 2x zoom, then the "apple" flagship does not look so cool

Other features of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Apple iPhone X in comparison

Below we have provided a table that compares some of the other parameters of the two flagship smartphones. In some cases, they are equal, however, the Galaxy S8 is more often ahead of its competitor.

Price

Actually, this was the place to start our conversation. According to preliminary data, the starting cost of the minimum modification of the Apple iPhone X with a built-in 64 Gb drive will be no less than 1150 US dollars. Compare Samsung. The Galaxy S8 is already available for as little as 700 or less.

And if you need a dual camera, then there is an even more advanced Galaxy Note 8, which certainly is not inferior in photographic abilities to the new "apple phone" (high-aperture optics, hardware zoom, etc.).

Instead of a resume

We decided to make the last comparison in “large” categories so as not to drown in small details:

Leader

Just the other day, a new smartphone from the Korean brand was presented - Samsung Galaxy A8. It would be a stretch to call this model a flagship, since it does not use a TOP processor, and the price is clearly lower than the cost of flagship smartphones. But the A8 received a dual front camera, which is a "highlight". Disputes immediately arise and a desire to compare the new phone with the flagship Galaxy S8, especially since they are similar.

Smartphones are similar in design, but inside they are completely different.

Comparison of characteristics

  • AMOLED display diagonal 5.8 inches, 2960 × 1440.
  • Processor: Exynos 8895 with embedded Mali-G71 MP20 GPU.
  • RAM: 4 GB.
  • Camera: one module, 12 MP, optical stabilization, lens with aperture f / 1.7.
  • Battery: 3000mAh.
  • IP68 water and dust protection, retina scanner, face scanner, AKG headphones included.
  • Market price: 46-50 thousand rubles.
  • AMOLED display, 5.6 inches, 1080 × 2220 (FullHD +).
  • Processor: Exynos 7885, embedded GPU Mali-G71.
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Main camera: 16 MP, f / 1.7 lens.
  • Battery: 3000mAh.
  • IP68 water and dust resistant, dual front camera: 18 and 8 megapixels, aperture f / 1.9, background blur is possible. Face recognition technology available.
  • Price on the market: 35,000 rubles.

Other characteristics in the form of the presence of NFC, Hall sensors and accelerometer, the amount of internal memory, etc. we missed - all this in these models is approximately the same. Let's dwell on the key differences.

Central processing units: Exynos 8895 vs Exynos 7885

The main difference between smartphones is chips and performance. From the name it is clear where the cooler processor is installed. The Galaxy S8 uses the most powerful processor from Exynos to date, the 8895, as well as the newer flagship Galaxy Note 8. The chip shows impressive results in synthetic tests.

In the benchmark, the Exynos 8895-based Antutu S8 scored 174,155 points.

Note that for the US market, the smartphone comes with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processors - these are the flagship chips used in most expensive Android products.

The Exynos 8895 is a 10nm processor with 8 cores: 4xCortex A53 and 4xM2. The first cluster with a Cortex-A53 unit saves energy, the second with M2 cores up to 3 GHz is connected when high performance is required. The chip is also equipped with a fast LTE Cat 16 modem, which allows data transfer at speeds up to 1 Gbps.

The integrated graphics chip Mali-G71 (already G-72) with 20 video processors can record video in 4K resolution at 60 FPS. Anyway, all the power of modern flagship processors comes down to working with 4K content.

The Samsung Galaxy A8 uses a weak chip, the Exynos 7885, designed for mid-range phones. Unlike the Exynos 8895, this processor is made using a 14nm process technology. It is equipped with 8 cores, and there are only two productive ones:

  • 2xCortex-A72 at 2.2GHz.
  • 6xCortex-A53 at 1.6GHz.

With such characteristics, the average performance is not surprising. In the Antutu benchmark, the Samsung Galaxy A8 based on the Exynos 7885 processor scored almost 84,000 points.

The chip is not powerful enough to record 4K video, and even more so at 60 FPS. This model records FullHD content at 30 FPS. Also, the LTE modem is weaker here - Cat 11.

The flagship Galaxy S8 is 2 times faster than the "middling" A8, so in comparison the winner is obvious.

Displays

Both smartphones use SuperAMOLED displays. Read more about AMOLED technology. The screen resolutions are different, as are the diagonals, but this is a slight difference. On two smartphones, a high-quality picture, accurate colors, no pixelation, minimum viewing angles, there is the possibility of fine-tuning the display for yourself, and a separate chip is responsible for the AlwaysOn Display technology, which guarantees the minimum power consumption of the function.

However, there are differences in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S8. In the A8 model, the brightness and resolution are lower, the resolution cannot be changed (in the S8 it is possible), the subjective advantage of the S8 is the glass curved at the edges, in the A8 it is straight. Otherwise, the differences are minimal.

Cameras

Let's start with the Galaxy S8 - it uses a non-TOP sensor from Sony - IMX333 with a resolution of 12 megapixels and a large aperture of f / 1.7. Optics are better only in Huawei Mate 10 and LG V30. We have already made a comparison with the LG V30 - you will find it. The S8 has excellent optics, there is even optical stabilization. It would seem that the presence of a stub is usually perceived when it comes to a flagship, but there are a bunch of expensive smartphones without it.

The camera in the Galaxy S8 makes cool shots even in low light, “tearing out” the remnants of light, the dynamic range is wide (displaying small details in dark and bright parts of the scene), focusing is instant and accurate.

Sample photos on Samsung Galaxy S8

When clicked, the images open in full size.

Especially impressive is the last photo, which clearly demonstrates the wide capabilities of the optics and sensor - in the pitch darkness, the smartphone "caught" the blue sky.

Camera Samsung Galaxy A8

The main feature of the new smartphone is a selfie camera. "Samsung" focused on it. They installed 2 modules with lenses with different focal lengths, which made it possible to blur the background (bokeh effect) and get more light. There are also various "tricks" that allow you to remove skin imperfections or add a mask to your face. In general, the camera is not bad, but nothing more. Blurring the background is cool, but most of the time you don't need it. Few people take the front-facing camera seriously.

Rear without optical stabilization, with a resolution of 16 megapixels, various effects are available. Unfortunately, the camera in the Galaxy A8 is weak - on the level of an inexpensive Chinese smartphone. It reproduces colors much worse, has a narrow dynamic range and catches less light. Also, due to the lack of optical stabilization, it smears, so the same landscape / object has to be photographed several times and choose the most successful one.

As a proof, we present a couple of comparison photographs. The first photo is on the A8, the second on the S8.

Snapshot on A8
Snapshot on S8
Snapshot on A8
Snapshot on S8

And the main thing is that the camera can record only FullHD video. It's not bad, but it doesn't compare to the S8's sensor. So the camera of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S8 wins with a big advantage. Moreover, one cannot even say that the A8 model uses a normal sensor with optics for the "average". The smartphone costs 35,000 rubles, and for that kind of money, the Koreans were obliged to supply a more or less normal camera.

Autonomy

Both models use 3000mAh batteries. But it is worth considering that the S8 has a central chip made using a 10nm process technology, and its power consumption is lower compared to 14nm chips.

Practical comparison: A8 at maximum brightness played video for 16.5 hours, S8 lasted just over 18 hours, that is, at least an hour and a half longer. Fast charging is present in both devices and charges phones up to 100% in 1 hour and 20 minutes. And although the Galaxy S8 lasts a little longer, we call it a winner by a stretch. In terms of autonomy, the phones are equal.

Other differences

There are no other significant differences between the phones. Both have the same features: there is a face scanner that allows you to unlock the phone, but the technology works poorly and is much inferior to the notorious Face ID. Also, gadgets are protected from water according to the IP68 standard, that is, they can be submerged under water to a depth of 1 meter, and there they, in theory, will last 30 minutes. You should not do this on purpose, and if it happened so, then the phone must be dried. And if the device gets into sea water, then it must first be rinsed in fresh water and dried. This will remove the salt from the membranes.

Apple and Samsung have been arguing for a long time about which of them is the flagship in the production of smartphones. In 2017, the flagship model Galaxy S8 was released under the Korean brand, which received a bezel-less screen.

The American corporation decided to answer this with the iPhone X, which also has a bezel-less display. But, besides this, fans of the products from this company will be able to purchase the iPhone 8. Yes, it does not have the same feature as the two devices described above, but it also has its advantages. In some respects, it even surpasses the S8.

As the specialists of the Technobalka company say, both models have a lot of similarities, but there are also many differences. Therefore, it would be appropriate to compare both smartphones with each other.

Performance

On this aspect, everything is ambiguous. The iPhone 8 has a significantly better processor compared to its competitor, all thanks to the fact that the American company decided to equip it with the A11 chip. On Samsung, they installed Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which, although not bad, is clearly not the best on the modern market.

But it's not all bad in the S8. For example, it has 4 gigabytes of RAM, which is twice as much as the 8th version of the iPhone. But, of course, this drawback makes it possible to neutralize a powerful processor to some extent.

If we talk about memory for storing information, then both smartphones have versions with a capacity of 64 GB. The American brand also offers customers a 256GB option. The S8 is only available in one 64GB variant, but thanks to the microSD slot, the memory can be expanded.

Screen and appearance

The comparison between iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 doesn't stop there. Particular attention should be paid to the appearance of the devices. By this indicator, the Korean manufacturer has surpassed its American competitor.

Its smartphone clearly stands out thanks to its bezel-less screen. In addition, it is clearly larger in size (5.8 inches versus 4.7), which is an impressive figure. In addition, it should be noted that the pixel density and aspect ratio of the screen is also higher in Samsung.

The iPhone 8 is completely inferior to the Galaxy S8 in terms of design and screen, although it is more convenient in terms of one-handed use.

Battery

Here, too, the Samsung S8 is better. The manufacturer has equipped the smartphone with a 3000 mAh battery. The iPhone 8 has a capacity of only 1,821 mAh. But practice shows that there is not much difference. In normal use, the charge is consumed almost identically. This is explained by the fact that the more powerful and larger display of the S8 requires more power.

Cameras

Here, both smartphones are almost the same. The Galaxy S8 has an 8MP selfie camera, the iPhone 8 has a 7MP selfie camera, but the average user won't notice the difference. At the same time, the rear camera of both models has a resolution of 12 megapixels and is capable of shooting video in 4K format.

Price

The cost of an iPhone 8 for 64 GB is about 56 thousand rubles, for 256 GB - 68 thousand rubles. In this case, the Galaxy S8 will cost 50 thousand rubles. The difference is small, but still Samsung is cheaper by 6 thousand. If the amount is not important, then the choice depends on preference. If you need a bright and colorful picture on a large screen, then it is better to purchase a device from a Korean manufacturer, if you need power, then it is better to give preference to an American company.
