The Matrix, a cult film shot by the then Wachowski brothers, became the brightest film event not only at the end of the 20th century, but throughout the history of cinema as a whole. Philosophy, depth, symbolism, coupled with unique special effects and absolutely exemplary production made this film one of the best fantasy action films of all time.

But there is something else elusive and attractive in it that makes you revisit it even more than a decade after the premiere. And every time to find new secrets.

To the anniversary of the first screening of The Matrix in Russia site collected 25 secrets about how this masterpiece was created.

  1. The name Neo (Neo) is an anagram of the word "chosen" (one).
  1. When Neo gets reprimanded for being late, a window washer wipes soap scum off the outside of a windowpane in the boss's office with his squeegee. The streaks on the glass strongly resemble rows of symbols running from top to bottom, with the help of which the operator observes the Matrix.
  1. The characters themselves on computer screens consist of reversed letters, numbers, and Japanese katakana characters.
  1. In the room where Neo is waiting for the Oracle, giant rabbits are shown on TV. Since Neo received a message at the beginning of the movie that he should follow the white rabbit, this symbolizes that he is on the right track. Also, white rabbits refer us to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
  1. Actor Will Smith turned down the role of Neo to star in the movie "Wild Wild West". Will regrets this decision to this day.
  1. Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Val Kilmer were also considered for the role of Neo.. But, after Kilmer and Pitt refused, the choice fell between Depp and Reeves. As a result, the role went to Keanu.
  1. An attentive viewer will be able to notice the date on one of the monitors at the very beginning of the film - February 18, 1998. Toward the end of the picture, a different date is displayed on the screen - September 18, 1999. Thus, the events described in the picture take place within 19 months.
  1. Jean Reno came close to playing Agent Smith. But he turned down the role, instead playing in the movie Godzilla.
  1. The role of Morpheus was offered to Sean Connery., however, he refused due to the fact that he did not understand anything in the script.
  1. The name Morpheus refers us to Morpheus- the god of dreams in ancient Greek mythology. In The Matrix, Morpheus's ship is called the Nebuchadnezzar, after the name of the king of Babylon. According to legend, this king tried to understand the meaning of his dreams.
  1. The inscription on board the ship "Mark 3.11" denotes the number of the verse of Holy Scripture from the Gospel of Mark: "The unclean, at the sight of Him, fell on their knees and proclaimed: You are the heir of God."
  1. In the words of the boss Neo at the beginning of the film, there is a thick hint on Neo's future abilities: “Think you're special, Mr. Anderson? And the rules are not written for you?
  1. Trinity means "trinity". Therefore, the number of the room in which she is at the beginning of the film is 303.
  1. And Neo's apartment number- an anagram of the word "one" (first, chosen, number one) - 101.
  1. It was originally supposed to receive $ 80 million for the production of the film, however, Warner Brothers released only 10. With the money, Larry (Lana) and Andy Wachowski decided to put it all into the first ten minutes of the film (the scene with Carrie-Anne Moss). The result impressed the studio so much that they received the rest of the money without any problems.
  1. In the film "The Matrix" the main characters use a Nokia 8110 mobile phone.
  1. In the first 45 minutes of the film performer Keanu Reeves speaks only 80 lines of text, 44 of which are questions. Moreover, for the first time he was allowed to voice more than four sentences in a row only in the final speech, just before the credits.
  1. Before filming The Matrix leading actors trained for 4 whole months, learning the basics of martial arts. They did not expect such loads and were completely sure that a few weeks would be enough to gain practical skills.
  1. Prior to filming, all actors, occupied in the main roles, and the main members of the film crew were required to read Jean Baudrillard's book "Simulacra and Simulation". This book is a popular critical theory that tries to explain where is "reality" and where, in fact, are "simulacra" and "simulation". From it, at the beginning of the film, Neo takes out a computer disk.
  1. The color blue was deliberately removed from the film. to show how dark the world of the Matrix is.

Do you remember Nokia 8110? This is the phone that became famous in the famous TV series The Matrix. A new version will be shown at MWC Barcelona.

Nokia 8110 is Nokia's fashion single-band mobile phone, featured in The Matrix TV series. In the film, there was a button on the back panel, when pressed, the protective cover of the phone snaps off by itself and you are automatically connected to your interlocutor; after the release of the film, a small batch of phones with this modification went on sale. In the future, it was possible to buy Nokia only with a sliding cover. It was announced in 1996, and the model went on sale in 1997. Currently out of production.

In the photo - the first model Nokia 8110

The return of the iconic Nokia 3310 last year was an event comparable to the premiere of flagship smartphones. It is difficult to explain this phenomenon through the prism of feeling for the phone, which many consider indestructible. Of course, this was not the case, but a legend formed around the phone of the Finnish company, which was successfully used by HMD.

It turned out that Nokia 3310 (2017) also became just a shadow of ancient glory. This does not change the fact that the phone has become popular and has an updated version with LTE support.

Nokia 8110 is back

The original 8110 is a phone introduced in 1996, more than two decades after its introduction. This model was positioned as a high-end device and became famous for its performance in the movie "The Matrix". We will see a new version of it soon.

We know very little about the Nokia 8110 (2018). Thanks to an anonymous informant, we know the appearance of this device.

It will go on sale in May. Like the upgraded Nokia 3310, the phone will support 4G standards and run YunOS, a modified version of Android.

The Nokia 3310 4G is equipped with a removable 1200 mAh lithium-ion battery. In addition, LTE supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. It is very likely that the new version of Nokia from Matrix will be very similar in this respect.

Remember last year's Nokia surprise at MWC 2017? It was then that HMD Global introduced a new version of the once popular phone. This time we were shown another Nokia 8110 push-button phone - a revived fashion device, the same slider from the cult movie "The Matrix". First impressions of Threshbox:

Like the original model, this phone has an unusual curved shape, which earned it the nickname "banana". The company emphasized this feature by releasing the device in a bright yellow color.

HMD Global Product Director Juho Sarvikas, speaking from the stage, introduced the new Nokia 8110 as a "holiday phone". This is the device that users can change their smartphones to take a break from the constant connection to the global web, simple but at the same time functional.

“There are still a huge number of adherents of conventional push-button devices. We see this as an opportunity to implement innovations in phones, and not just re-release 2G phones,” said Juho Sarvikas.
Nokia 8110 2018 is not an Android smartphone. The device runs on the Smart Feature OS operating system, which contains a set of specific applications such as Facebook, Twitter, maps, Google Search, as well as Google Assistant and, of course, the branded Snake game, where without it. Looks like HMD Global even made something like an app store. It is possible that developers will be able to create third-party applications for this OS.

The phone received a 2.4-inch QVGA display, Qualcomm 205 mobile platform, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of flash storage. The device is equipped with a 2 megapixel camera and a 1500 mAh battery, which is enough for 17 days of battery life. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The full specifications of the Nokia 8110 are as follows:

  • Display: 2.4 inches, resolution 320×240 pixels;
  • Processor: Qualcomm 205 (MSM8905) 1.1 GHz;
  • RAM: 512 MB LPDDR3;
  • Storage: 4 GB eMMC4;
  • Camera: 2 MP;
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS/AGPS;
  • Operating system: Smart Feature OS;
  • Battery: 1500 mAh;
  • Network: 2G: 900/1800, 3G: WB-CDMA 1/5/8/39, 4G: FDD-LTE 1/3/5/7/8/20, TDD-LTE 39/40/41 / (38) ;
  • Color: black, yellow ("banana").

Last year's MWC was one of the most interesting in recent years, thanks in no small part to Nokia, which garnered more attention with the return of the 3310 than any other company put together. It turns out that this trick can be pulled every year, so the same thing happened at MWC 2018. What else was shown at the largest exhibition of mobile electronics - in the material.

The return of the banana from Nokia

This year, the company decided to follow a successful strategy and once again show "hello from the past" in a new wrapper - Nokia 8110. Frankly, the choice is unusual, because few people now even remember the "banana phone" from The Matrix.

In fact, there is nothing unusual about the new 8110 (just like last year's 3310). This is a regular handset, but with 4G support. It has a 2.4-inch screen with a resolution of 320x240, a plastic case, a two-megapixel camera and everything that we are used to seeing in dialers. The only nuance is the price - 80 euros. And this is too much for a regular dialer in a plastic case.

Otherwise, Nokia has remained at the same level. Not particularly remarkable smartphones with not the lowest prices. Only Nokia 1 stands out, which got into the Android Go program and costs less than the Nokia 8110 dialer - 70 euros. This phone runs a lite version of Android 8.1 and should receive updates along with the Pixel. It also has 4G support and a five megapixel camera. Of course, it is very bad, like the screen, hardware and everything else. But this is pure Android, which will certainly be better than all that rubbish at similar prices.

The flagship Nokia 8 Sirocco (a reference to the Nokia 8800 Sirocco of 2006) once again confirmed that the company does not have a single course and at least some vision of its own future. It does not stand out in any way and seems to be molded from the details of other smartphones. Even in the general Nokia lineup, it looks superfluous. Here the screen is similar to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with rounded edges, 16:9 aspect ratio and a diagonal of 5.5 inches; There is a dual camera with zoom. Sirocco runs on a Snapdragon 835 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal flash memory. Its price is 750 euros.

Rethinking the price from Samsung

In the year of the 30th anniversary of Samsung's mobile division, the company was not at all embarrassed that they were releasing the same smartphone for the second year in a row (although it had reinvented the iPhone 6 for four years). To list the external differences, the fingers of one hand are enough: the frame under the screen is slightly smaller, the sensors are hidden near the speaker, the fingerprint scanner is moved under the camera. The main trump card of Samsung was the "rethought" camera.

It is almost impossible to surprise with a camera in 2018, now even state employees can shoot normally. Samsung came from the side of professional photographers and explained to the townsfolk what an aperture is and why it is needed. The S9 is the first smartphone in the world to be capable of both f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures. But is it really that important for such a small sensor? The manufacturer promises that now the smartphone will be even better at shooting in poor light, but this has not yet been verified. If we turn to the media, which received the device in advance and rolled out reviews after the embargo was lifted, then the difference between the S9 and Note8 is not visible at all. At the same time, he learned how to shoot Slow Mo video at 960 frames per second. Moreover, the phone itself understands when an action is taking place in the frame, and tries to choose the most appropriate moment for slowing down.

The strangest part of the presentation was the story about AR Emoji (aka “selfie moji”). I don’t want to comment on this “innovation” at all, because this copy of Animoji is implemented incredibly poorly. The S9 does not have additional sensors that make a 3D model of the face, but everything works solely on the efforts of the front camera. Because of this, the little men are scary, not funny.

Both devices received almost identical characteristics: the Exynos 9810 processor (or Snapdragon 845), four gigabytes of RAM for the regular S9 and six for the S9 +, 64/128/256 gigabytes of storage with a slot for a memory card up to 400 gigabytes. The screen resolution is also the same (2960x1440), but the regular S9 has a diagonal of 5.8 inches, while the S9 + has 6.2. The key difference is in the cameras, as the S9+ has two main camera modules, which allows you to take 2x zoom and portrait shots with a blurry background.

Regarding protection, nothing has changed: smartphones have a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner and a face scanner. At the presentation, almost nothing was said about them, so there is a suspicion that the phone is still easy to fool with a photo.

The Koreans took the path of least resistance: they improved the hardware, updated the camera, and tried to catch up with trending topics in their own way. However, nothing more is needed, because almost no one can adequately answer the S9. The only disappointing thing is that such minor changes led to a significant price increase. So, the usual S9 was estimated at 60 thousand rubles, and S9 + - at 67 thousand. For that kind of money, you can easily buy an iPhone X or a pair of Galaxy S8.

Huawei secret button

For unknown reasons, this year Huawei has postponed the presentation of new smartphones until March, so MWC showed a niche "passer". Actually, there were only three key topics: a new laptop, a new tablet and 5G.

Frame: TheUnlockr / YouTube

Most of the event was dedicated to the MateBook X Pro laptop with a 14-inch borderless touch screen that occupies 91 percent of the front panel. For comparison: the Dell XPS 13 has a value of only 80.7 percent, which Huawei did not forget to recall. At the same time, the webcam was placed under the button between F6 and F7. Otherwise, this is quite a typical laptop with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce MX150. The same, for example, is installed in Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3. That's just a laptop from Xiaomi can be bought for less than a thousand euros, and the cost of Huawei MateBook X Pro starts from 1.5 thousand euros. This is far from the most correct comparison - at least because the Huawei laptop has an incredible screen and it is built an order of magnitude better than the Mi Air. In addition, it is generally unknown whether it will appear in Russia, so there is nothing to compare.

With regard to tablets, nothing extraordinary happened: the company showed three MediaPad M5 with screens of 8.4 and 10.8 inches. One of them received a Pro postscript, and the manufacturer does not hide the fact that it should become a competitor to the iPad Pro. Recall that at the last MWC, Samsung showed its "killer" iPad Pro, but for some reason a miracle did not happen, and the Galaxy Tab S3 was forgotten faster than it went on sale.

M5 Pro received a display with a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels with a system for adjusting the screen temperature to the ambient light. It is noteworthy that the Harman / Kardon logo flaunts on the back cover, which indicates the high sound quality in the M5, but the tablet does not have a headphone jack. But the M5 Pro comes with a proprietary keyboard and stylus. But the main purpose of all three M5s is watching movies and playing games, not work or drawing.

Sales of MediaPad M5 will begin in March 2018. Prices for the entry-level 8.4-inch model start at 350 euros, while the 10.8-inch version is priced at 400 euros. The cost of the M5 Pro varies from 500 to 600 euros.

Belated response from Sony

For more than a year, everyone has been releasing “frameless” smartphones, but not Sony. Sony would rather try its hand at creating 4K screens in smartphones, Android projectors, "innovative" headphones and more. But finally, this Japanese company has prepared its answer to Samsung, Apple and everyone else.

Xperia XZ2 received a 5.7-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels. At the same time, the frames around the perimeter are still huge, which is why the phone turned out to be larger than the Galaxy S9 and other classmates. Sony decided to rethink the design of their devices, so the new Xperia does not look like a piece of tile. Along with this, they abandoned the fingerprint scanner in the lock button, although the idea was excellent and made Sony stand out from the rest. Now the scanner is on the back cover, like everyone else. Another disappointment was the headphone jack, which had no place in the XZ2's large chassis.

Sony did not forget about the compact version of the smartphone. Moreover, they differ only in screen size - only five inches, and everything else, up to the resolution, they have exactly the same (except that the cover of the XZ2 Compact is plastic). Both phones received an eight-core Snapdragon 845, four gigabytes of RAM and a slot for a memory card. The main camera has a resolution of 19 megapixels (f / 2.0), but you can’t expect anything special from it, because Sony has always had problems with cameras. And even recording Super Slow Mo at 960 frames per second is not encouraging, because Samsung now has the same thing.

And there was nothing else at the Sony presentation. It is unlikely that new smartphones will make a splash in the market, because, supposedly, the cost of the older version is 800 euros, and the Compact is 600. However, Sony is still trying to do something with its smartphones, even now the design has changed for the first time in so many years. Therefore, it remains to believe that someday they will regain their former greatness.

Brick from Energizer

It turns out that battery manufacturer Energizer has been making smartphones for quite some time. Moreover, at MWC the company brought the most unusual smartphone of the exhibition - Energizer Power Max P16K Pro. As you might guess, this is a smartphone with a 16,000 milliamp-hour battery. It would be more correct to call it a battery with a built-in smartphone.

It is not surprising that this is a heavy and thick brick. Surprisingly, Energizer didn't skimp on the hardware. P16K Pro received a six-inch screen with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels, as well as a MediaTek Helio P25 processor and six gigabytes of RAM. It even has four cameras! The dual main one has a resolution of 16 and 13 megapixels, and the front one - 13 and 5. According to GSMArena journalists, this "miracle" weighs about 300 grams, and reaches one and a half centimeters in thickness.

The price and date of the start of sales of Energizer Power Max P16K Pro, unfortunately, are not specified.

Knock knock, Neo. Wake up! You are stuck in the Matrix. Follow the White Rabbit...

I know you know this line. And you also saw this movie. Stop! Listen, it sounds like the “slider” call from the cult masterpiece of the Wachowski brothers.

They also hear - the Finnish company HMD Global has revived the "banana phone" Nokia 8110.

The presentation took place as part of the MWC 2018 exhibition in Barcelona.

Nokia 8110 Specifications

The Messenger from The Matrix was equipped with a 2.4-inch color screen (320 x 240 pixels). The display shows the KaiOS shell interface; you can play the classic "toy" Snake.

The gadget supports 4G LTE connection and some modern applications such as Google Assistant and instant messengers.

Using a phone for web surfing is still that flour, but it will make a powerful hot spot for distributing the Internet to other devices (laptop or tablet).

The phone has a Qualcomm 205 chip; it is paired with 512MB of RAM; there is a 2 megapixel camera.

The body of the 8110 4G still has the same curved banana shape as two decades ago, but it has lost its antenna and is thinner.

The 1200 mAh battery guarantees that you won't remember the charger for at least 25 days (standby).

The phone will come in two colors: classic black and bold bright yellow. Very even nothing!

Like the original, you slide the keypad cover down to accept a call and slide it back to end.

But what's really cool is that this phone brings me back to 2007, 1999 to be exact - an erotic and dangerously desired dream.

The novelty will appear in stores no earlier than May. Such a “miracle” will cost about $97.

Opinion

Smartphones and frameless screens are, of course, very good, but there is no magic at all, which is actually a shame.

Still, there is a naked charm in using a retro phone, even if it is a remake.

Will the new 8110 be popular with fans?

Apparently, this is another niche product: the phone's creators appeal to your personal emotional attachment to the brand, and do not rely on common sense.

Probably, the new Nokia is not the best one in the world. However, for people who remember what the cherished phone from The Matrix is, this does not matter.
