Talking about the XZ2 Premium, Sony recalls that in all areas there is equipment for professionals: professional cameras, camcorders and much more. But there are no smartphones for professionals. What professional tasks should a smartphone perform? Sony believes it should take on the role of a portable professional camera for journalists, bloggers and photographers. Like any professional technology, this smartphone has top specs, so it can also be considered the pinnacle of Sony technologies: 4K display, top chipset, the first model with a dual camera module, 4K HDR content recording and viewing, and much more. But is this enough to pay 80 thousand for this smartphone? Let's figure it out.
Design, dimensions, controls
Starting with the Xperia XZ2, the company switched to a new design called Ambient Flow, based on smooth edges and beautiful smooth transitions between them. Like any innovation, such a design caused a lot of controversy among fans of the brand: someone liked it, someone rejected it. I take this change calmly: yes, this is not the same angular block that we are used to seeing at Sony, but you yourself said that it was time to refresh the design, so the company did it.
The company uses a win-win combination of glass lid and metal frame. The lid has an oleophobic coating, it gets dirty quickly, but prints can be easily wiped off with any cloth.
Above the display is a front camera, light and proximity sensors, and an indicator light. The navigation buttons are on-screen, so only the Sony logo can be seen under the screen. But if you look closely, you will notice a thin slit of the main speaker, it is almost invisible, but it plays well, creating a stereo pair with the spoken one.
On the right are the power button, volume rocker, and a physical on / off camera button, with a light press allowing you to focus, and a stronger press to take a shot.
At the bottom there is a Type-C port and a microphone hole, and on top is a second microphone and a tray for two nanoSIM and microSD cards. The slot is hybrid, so you have to choose between a second SIM card and a memory card.
The back cover has a dual camera module and a fingerprint scanner. Symmetry is another feature of Ambient Flow, so the scanner sits exactly in the center of the lid. Such a low landing takes some getting used to, the first time I constantly missed it. Sony explains this arrangement by the fact that while typing, your index finger rests just on the scanner, another thing is that when we pull the device out of our pocket, the same index finger lies above the scanner.
The dimensions of the smartphone are 158 x 80 x 11.9 mm, the weight is 236 grams. At the moment, this is one of the thickest and heaviest models among the current flagships. The thickness and weight of the device are due to the massive dual camera module, in any case, this is how the manufacturer explains this point. Taking the device out of the box, I was a little upset, it seemed to me that the test period would be very uncomfortable, the whole device really seemed quite massive. But, thanks to the sloping edges, it is comfortable to hold, and you get used to the weight in a couple of days.
Compared to Sony Xperia XZ3
The smartphone has IP65 waterproof rating. On the Sony official website, they write the protection standard as IP65 / 68, but in fact it corresponds to IP65. Here is what is written in the note to the characteristics of the model:
The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is water- and dust-resistant, making it rain- and water-resistant (remember to keep all ports and covers securely closed when doing this). Screen
The presence of 4K resolution in a smartphone is a very controversial decision, because most users will no longer see much difference, and they will definitely feel the battery consumption for working with high resolution. Therefore, Sony uses a standard FHD resolution to work in a standard interface and most applications, while applications for viewing photos and videos are already switching to honest 4K.
I also cannot help but note that the display of the smartphone has a ratio of 16: 9, so when watching most videos, the entire display area will be used.

I really liked the display itself, it has excellent natural color rendering, a wide range of brightness, information is visible even on a sunny day, and at night the minimum brightness will not hit your eyes.
Traditionally, in all new Sony smartphones, you can adjust the color rendition and white balance of the display to your taste, although, in my opinion, the screen is already perfectly calibrated.
Battery
Battery capacity is standard for flagship devices. Yes, there is no impressive 4000 mAh battery, but the device runs on a top-end energy-efficient chipset, and also supports Stamina mode, which allows you to significantly extend the battery life by limiting the background work of applications. In my mode of use, the smartphone was able to give about 4-5 hours of the display on, this included mail, social networks, mobile Internet, web surfing and some video.
The device supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging and wireless fast charging. In both cases, a full charge takes 90-100 minutes.
Memory, chipset, performance
The smartphone runs on one of the best chipsets available today. Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 easily covers all scenarios for using the device, from simple web surfing to running productive toys at maximum settings. When running benchmarks or playing games, the body of the device heats up, but not much. The results for most of the tests are close to the maximum, however, this is not surprising.
Communication capabilities
I always love it when a company doesn't skimp on wireless interfaces, and Sony is a great example of this. The smartphone supports Wi-Fi Calling, VoLTE (both technologies are already working with MTS, MegaFon also has VoLTE), AptX HD and LDAC wireless codecs, and, of course, it has an NFC module. You can only find fault with the lack of IrDA, only now almost no one installs it, except for Xiaomi.
Camera
Let's move on to the most important section of the smartphone - the camera. Why is it the most important? Because it was on her that the focus was made when positioning the smartphone. Say, it is useful for professionals who need a compact, but high-quality camera. Let me remind you that this is the first Sony model with a dual camera module. The second, black and white module is used for a wider dynamic range, and also allows you to take better pictures in difficult lighting conditions, but this is in theory, let's see how in practice.
Traditionally, there are no problems with daytime shots: good detail, accurate white balance. In artificial lighting, the situation gets a little worse, but in my opinion, the smartphone still does a good job. But at night, the problems inherent in cameras of many Sony smartphones begin. The device raises the ISO values, as a result the picture comes out strongly overexposed. But even if you reduce this parameter in manual mode, the final sharpness of the picture is still at a relatively low level.
The smartphone has electronic image stabilization, but, unfortunately, no optical stabilization, and this is clearly noticeable both during night shooting and when shooting video.
Let me remind you that the main camera module is the good old Motion Eye, so it got all its key features. These include shooting 3D objects and superslomo 960 fps. By the way, such shooting in FHD is still available only from Sony. However, keep in mind that such shots are very sensitive to light, even at home it will be difficult to shoot a good video, a lot of noise will immediately appear. So I recommend shooting superslomo outdoors on a nice sunny day.
Multimedia capabilities
Sony is gradually abandoning the minijack in their smartphones, at the same time putting the corresponding adapter in the kit, and also starting to release headphones with Type-C. The sound quality directly depends on the headphones used, but when compared with other smartphones, the XZ2 Premium sounds comparable to the flagships of other companies.
The device has two stereo speakers, one on the bottom edge, the other is also a spoken speaker. They have excellent sound quality and will replace your small portable speaker. The company also uses the Dynamic Vibration System. When you turn it on, the smartphone begins to vibrate to the beat of the music, this creates a greater immersion effect and should appeal to game lovers or those who watch spectacular films on a smartphone. The smartphone runs Android 8.0 and Xperia UI. With each new update, the shell from Sony gives more and more of its functions to the side of Google, and now Xperia UI strongly resembles stock Android with only a few manufacturer changes, for example, Sony left their audio and video players, launcher and appearance of the settings. Moreover, all these applications are updated through Google Play.
Reducing its own software features allows the company to quickly update its devices or immediately release them on a fresh version of Android. So, the Xperia XZ3 runs Android 9.0 out of the box, and the XZ2 Premium is likely to receive this update before the end of the year.
Impressions
At the moment, the smartphone is sold at retail for 80 thousand rubles. As far as I know, the batch of devices is relatively small, we can say that this is a piece goods. The model has many strengths: full support for wireless interfaces, 4K HDR shooting and playback, interesting camera features, the same superslomo and 3D face scanning, as well as Dynamic Vibration System.
However, it was not without its drawbacks, I will attribute to them the large weight and thickness of the smartphone. If we compare its dimensions with the current flagships, then there will be a clear loss of XZ2 Premium in this parameter. The camera in the smartphone, in general, is not bad, but in terms of night shooting, it has much stronger competitors, the same Huawei P20 Pro.
I think that this smartphone is designed for loyal Sony users who have not had time to follow current trends in the smartphone market for a long time, but there is money and the memory that Sony technology did not let them down. It is for this loyal audience that the Xperia XZ2 Premium is designed.

Today it is one of the most advanced classes of mobile devices. Which touchphones will set the tone this winter? The ZOOM.CNews test laboratory knows the answer.By the time of its release in April, this device will be the most functional Android smartphone in the company's arsenal (and indeed the most functional model), that is, a flagship with a high-quality camera, a huge and very good screen, with a very interesting appearance. Maximum features, high price - this is normal for a flagship. Questions remain, of course. For example, at the time of release, it does not have the newest version of the OS ( Android 1.6, although 2.1 is available), there is no multitouch. Perhaps these are the main constraints, otherwise the device fully corresponds to the title of the flagship.
It is not so important how popular this smartphone will be. Flagships almost never became widespread, the price (and size, by the way) plays a role, other, simpler devices are becoming widespread. Sony Ericsson X10 is a good player in its segment, the segment of top-end devices. Yes, the launch did not go too smoothly, just at this time the flagship HTC, the device ... Perhaps this is the only device with which the X10 can and should be compared, everything else is either still very far from the start of sales, or is inferior in performance. In total, only two most interesting, functional ones will be available on the market for several months. Android, Desire and X10. Let's talk about them in more detail.
Comparison
It is difficult for me to compare these two devices, since I really like each one, each has its own pros and cons. Take, for example, the dimensions of the case. They are almost identical, and the weight is the same down to the gram (135 g). Moreover, in Sony Ericsson X 10 is noticeably larger screen, 4.0 inches versus 3.7, slightly higher and resolution in height (the screen is more elongated). Due to the larger screen, I also liked the virtual QWERTY keyboard, it is objectively more convenient to type on the X10. The screen size is the most important here, it's hard to disagree with that.
On the other hand, screen technology AMOLED in Desire against TFT in X10 wins, and significantly, the HTC screen is more colorful, brighter, more viewing angles. The sensitivity is approximately at the same level, both screens are capacitive, with glass protection (it should be noted that this is not glass, as in some devices, but fiberglass with scratch protection, a more common material in telephone construction).
Controlling slightly ahead of HTC Desire with its optical joystick, battery Sony Ericsson X10 (1500 vs 1400 mA * h), from memory - Desire (576 MB RAM against 384 MB), but the X10 has twice as much internal memory (1 GB) and there is an 8 GB memory card included. An important point for me personally is the sound quality, Sony Ericsson X10 is quite suitable as a replacement for a player, here the quality is comparable to Nokia N97, the benchmark among smartphones. HTC Desire plays a little differently, but there is not much difference. But in terms of the camera, the X10 has a clear advantage. There is an 8 MP matrix and video recording in WVGA resolution.
Interface is a separate big topic, I cannot directly compare Sense and TimeScape UI ... The first one is definitely more ambitious - it is its own shell that changes all the menus on the phone. Moreover, it is colorful, convenient, with the maximum number of effects. TimeScape and MediaScaspe - these are applications that are focused on collecting information and social activities or media files. In this area, they are stronger than the version from HTC, there are some unique findings. For example, in one click in the interface MediaScape the device will find video clips of the selected artist on the Internet and offer to play them in Youtube ; will show the songs missing in the album and a list of other albums in memory; it will even find all the photos that contain the desired subscriber from the phone book. In general, here everyone has their own preferences, I will not give an assessment. I can only say that in everyday life Sense I like it more as a completely redesigned interface Android.
Few facts
The interface is the central part of this device, TimeScape and MediaScape are a find of the company, there are no analogues in other smartphones. As I already said, any (even the simplest and least functional) interface over the basic version of Windows Mobile or Android is a plus. Big or not, but a plus. And the fact that X10 has this add-on, and, moreover, is really interesting, I see only positive aspects. In the process of using the device, some flaws were nevertheless revealed, so far the interface is a little damp. I cannot directly compare it with the new version of HTC Sence, they are different. Perhaps for the majority Sence would be preferable, nevertheless it is a complete overhaul of the base interface, more colorful and functional, while TimeScape and MediaScape are essentially add-ons, applications.
In addition to Google Maps, X10 has turn-by-turn navigation (full navigation with tips, different modes) WisePilot. The same navigation program in SE Satio, as well as in LG BL40 Chocolate, and many others. A clear plus in front of Google Maps - maps are stored in memory. There is no need to download them from the net every time.
Further, the Xperia X10 has a very convenient gallery, its own keyboard, video player, MP3 player, all of which differ from the basic Android interface. The camera interface has been redrawn, there are applications like TrackID and some other Sony Ericsson tricks. It immediately becomes clear that a lot of work has been done on the applications and the interface. In addition, the Sony Ericsson X10 has Google services, in particular Market, a full set of standard applications and capabilities of Android smartphones.
Now the device is running Android 1.6 (Donut), but the company promises to update to version 2.0. There are no exact dates now, the update must be carried out while saving the add-ons TimeScape and MediaScape , this also takes time. Whether multitouch will appear with the update of the OS version is not yet clear, I do not know the exact answer to this question.
Design, convenience
Let's talk a little about the design of the device. The first thing to say is that the Xperia X10 is not as big as it looks from the photos. These are the dimensions of Apple iPhone or HTC Desire, that is, acceptable, while the X10 screen size is noticeably larger. The weight, 135 grams, is within the same framework.
The impression from the design is excellent, the X10 looks beautiful, expensive, the same Sony Style is definitely to blame. There will be two colors available, white and black, both looks great. The design of the back surface differs, for the black device it is matte soft-touch plastic, for the white one it is glossy. The build quality is good, the device does not creak, the battery compartment cover has enough fasteners so that there is no backlash. I would like the presence of metal in the case, but the plastic in the X10 is of high quality, comparable to the Samsung I8910 HD, for example.
Everything is in order with the connectors: there is 3.5 mm for connecting a headset, micro-USB under the cap, that is, Fast-Port is gradually becoming a thing of the past, which is endlessly pleasing. On the right side there are buttons for launching / shooting, volume control. There is only one speaker, its location is comfortable, the sound does not overlap, although it is quite quiet, sometimes it is easy to miss a call. There is a hole for attaching a strap, by the way, it is located at the bottom end.
The battery compartment cover is securely fastened, there is no backlash. Under it is a new type of battery (1500 mAh), as well as a slot for a memory card. Minus: to change the card, you need to remove the battery, there is no hot swap.
What's under the screen: three hardware buttons. Large, with good travel, but there are only three of them, although usually Android smartphones have one more. The Xperia X10 doesn't have a useless search button, hurray. The rest of the set is standard: "Back", "Home" and "Menu". The off / blocking button is separate, in the upper end, and the call acceptance and rejection buttons are virtual. In general, there are no problems with management.
Screen and text input
The main part of the front surface is occupied by a large screen, and the distance to the edges of the case is very small. In fact, the screen determines the dimensions of the phone and its appearance. The screen is 4 inches long and has an aspect ratio of 16: 9. In the same iPhone, the screen is noticeably smaller, but the device itself is comparable in size. The explanation is that the layout of the control elements and their size are very well thought out in the Sony Ericsson X10. The buttons are comfortable, while they do not take up too much space on the case.
The screen is not recessed into the body, it means finger control, the screen technology is capacitive, that is, the stylus is not provided. The screen is protected by a scratch-resistant surface, not a thin film like resistive screens. The sensitivity is good, the screen responds well to the finger. What is bad - there is no multitouch, and it is unlikely to appear, although I would very much like to. I really liked the quality of the screen, the level of brightness. Due to this resolution, the picture looks smooth, there are no complaints. Icons, other elements, fonts are very well drawn, the interface looks neat and beautiful. But in comparison with AMOLED screens, the TFT element in the Xperia X10 loses, of course.
What about text input? Due to the size of the screen, it was possible to implement an excellent virtual keyboard. With very large keys, with a distance between each adjacent one. In general, I had almost no input errors, and I was not at all used to on-screen keyboards. There are hints as you type, the dictionary is automatically trained and suggests the words you use most often. After a couple of weeks with the phone, typing prompts will be very fast.
TimeScape interface
In the SE Xperia X10 interface, the main thing is the TimeScape and MediaScape add-ons ... Icons are on the desktop, applications can be launched or exited, this is not a replacement for the standard interface Android rather two separate additions. Rather, MediaScape Is an application for working with Photo, Video and Music, a multimedia center, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the interface. But TimeScape maybe they have such an option. In the settings, you just need to set this interface as used by default instead of the traditional desktop Android.
TimeScape is a socially oriented interface that works with phone book, social media accounts ( Twitter, Facebook and even VKontakte), email and many other applications (the list is configured manually) and collects various information about updates. For example, statuses on Twitter, Facebook, incoming SMS and E-mail messages, missed calls and much more are displayed in the form of cards. You can view all this in a single list, then all updates will be shown on the screen, or you can move between separate categories for messages, social networks, and so on.I am very pleased with the drawing, the level of animation, cards with information fly beautifully across the desktop. Some errors are not encouraging, for example, in Twitter no spaces between words (in Russian firmware, everything is fine with English characters).
In general, as a desktop replacement TimeScape interface will like it if you are completely "in" social networks. Here, all updates are available in a couple of clicks, plus there are 9 desktops that contain information about calls, messages, updates to the media library, player, and so on. If you choose an interface TimeScape , you will have to abandon the usual widgets Android , by the way. There will be only four icons for accessing the main applications.

MediaScape is a further development of the Sony Ericsson multimedia menu, which is well known to us from all previous devices. MediaScape has become more beautiful and much more functional. There are three categories (large icons at the bottom of the screen): photo, music, video. Accordingly, there are no separate applications for working with these categories, everything is done through the interface MediaScape.
Working with photos is simple, there are three categories: recently taken, recently viewed and favorites, you can view a single list of thumbnails of photos. Each menu has horizontal scrolling, the name of the category is displayed at the bottom. The "Home" button is not immediately visible, it returns us to the main menu for working with MediaScape , while the hardware key is to the home screen. Separately marked network photos, web albums on sites, the same Facebook.
Working with video is organized in about the same way, everything is convenient, sorting does not raise any questions. Such a large screen, it would seem, was created for watching movies, but there is one problem: in the X10, like in many others Android -smartphones, no preinstalled codecs, Avi you won't be able to watch it, let alone other formats of unconverted video. This is definitely ahead Samsung, you can't argue with that.
With music, everything is much more interesting. Did I mention that the sound quality is very good? As a replacement for the player Xperia X 10 suits me completely, low frequencies are well expressed here, the volume is enough even in the subway. The quality is comparable to Nokia N 97, this is an excellent level, sufficient for most users, obviously. It's been a long time since I had such good impressions of the sound quality in devices. Player interface in MediaScape excellent, there is nothing to complain about. With standard Android -player, I will not compare it, this is heaven and earth. Perhaps, due to the lack of an equalizer, the player in the Xperia X10 is one of the best in terms of the number of display options, settings and convenience. Thanks to the button Infinity has literally everything here: e If you press on a song while listening to it, the device will show all the information about the artist, song, album, other tracks from this album - in general, whatever you want. By the way, I would like to note separately the search (an important thing if the list of songs is very long), alphabetical sorting on the right side of the screen, and perfectly implemented kinetic scrolling. Everything is in order here with the scrolling speed, smoothness. So far, the problem is MediaScape exactly two: there is no support for encodings in Russian firmware yet, and the transition between different categories in the player itself is a little confusing. But I won't talk about the second one as a problem, after a week of use everything fell into place.
It should also be said that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has a proprietary TrackID application, which determines the name of the artist and the song by a fragment of sound, this is the hallmark of all phones of the manufacturer. There are also lists of popularity for each country, which songs were identified by users most often.
Camera
The camera in the smartphone is 8.1-megapixel, the same as in the W995, the Aino is the same module. The quality of the photo is not the best, the module is average in quality, but the X10 is not a photo flagship. In daylight, the photos are quite acceptable, the same can be said for the video. The device writes videos in WVGA resolution (800 x 480 dots), 30 frames per second. Good video, no complaints here.
Redesigned camera interface, with basic Android it cannot be compared. There are a bunch of focusing modes, settings and scenes - everything is the same as other devices of the company.
The combination of the largest screen diagonal, an 8-megapixel camera, and a high-quality assembly in one device gave reason to assume that here it is - the salvation of Sony Ericsson from problems. The communicator will give an impetus to development and show the market that the manufacturer has not only ambitions, but also a real reason to regain lost positions among high-end phones.
And not just communication means, but devices designed to communicate in all sorts of ways, whether it be the usual voice communication or correspondence on social networks and blogs like Vkontakte or Twitter. Sony Ericsson has created its own shell designed to improve the usability of such services based on the growing popularity of communication between people in this form.
Appearance
The X10 can be considered one of the largest devices, the dimensions of 119 x 63 x 13 mm are predetermined by the large screen diagonal, which, however, did not greatly affect the thickness of the phone: even if it is not a leader in this parameter, but at the same time the dimensions are quite reasonable ... Although to someone a smartphone of this size will seem unnecessarily bulky. But almost all the space is reserved for a large screen, so the dimensions of the phone cannot be attributed to disadvantages, the space is used reasonably and justifiably.
The phone weighs 135 grams, which is also quite acceptable for a device of this class. The device fits into jeans, but it is not so easy to fit the device into narrowed trousers, and it sticks out. Still, the place for him is rather in a jacket pocket or in a bag. There is no need to talk about the breast pocket of the shirt.
The XPERIA is available in two color options, available in Luster White and Sensuous Black. A sample of dark, neutral and universal colors took part in the review. Personally, I like the black version more - it has a back cover made of a pleasant, rough soft-touch material, in contrast to its light-colored brother, where the back panel is made of a soiled and glossy material. The design and beauty of the blinding white color is, of course, great, but I stand for practicality, the black phone is more pleasant in the hand, besides, it is more wear-resistant, which is also a plus.
The phone has deliberately angular forms of the front panel, they create a kind of brutal image of a "man's" phone, which can be called such, proceeding from its straight lines and impressive dimensions.
On the front panel, at the very top, there is a small semicircular cutout, into which the earpiece is inscribed. If you look closely, you can see a couple of small holes where the sound itself comes from. Light and proximity sensors are hidden under the black plastic. In addition to them, there was also a place for an indicator that notifies of a discharged battery.
Under the large screen, which has eaten away almost the entire plane, there is a strip of three practically merged into one single keys. The buttons resemble metal in their color, but in reality they are plastic. The travel of the buttons is small and distinct, the clicks are pleasant.
The first key brings up the functional menu, the second is to return to the desktop, as well as to activate the manager of running applications (you need to hold down this button for a few seconds), the latter returns to the previous menu item or exits the program. Between the buttons there is a pair of bright LEDs of incomprehensible purpose - they do not notify about missed events, they are mostly decorative in nature.
Taking the X10 in hand and twisting and twisting, you can notice and feel that it has slightly beveled side edges. In addition, the back panel is slightly curved with the Human curvature branding in action, all for the convenience of the phone owner. Indeed, it would be inconvenient to hold a neatly cut "brick" in your hand - like a trifle, but they make up such a complete picture.
At the top there is a micro USB-connector covered with a plastic cap in the color of the case, which is suitable both for connecting a charger and for synchronizing the X10 with a computer. In the center you can see a 3.5 mm jack hole for connecting both a complete stereo headset and any of your own headphones. And here is the screen lock button. It is made of silvery plastic, has an oval shape and just slightly protrudes from the body. The phone was obviously developed by a right-hander - the index finger of the right hand finds this button by itself and lies directly on it when you hold the phone. For left-handers, pressing a key is no longer so convenient.
There are no controls on the left side.
On the right side of the phone you can see a large paired volume control button made of silvery plastic. It is felt well, the clicks are clear, and it is comfortable to use. And below, on the same side, there is a button to turn on the camera.
Along the entire body of the phone, along the side perimeter, there is a sparkling silver stripe that adorns the strict black panels.
The back cover is made of soft-touch plastic, rough and pleasant to the touch. It allows you to avoid scratches and abrasions, and it does not easily soiled, which can also be attributed to its advantages.
The panel has a cutout for the camera lens and backlight and also has branding on it for added joy to the owner.
Removing the panel is quite simple - you just need to pry the notch on the bottom end of the case with your fingernail and pull it towards you. The gaze will open the battery, which blocks access to the SIM-card and flash-memory. There is no hot swap microSD card.
The X10 is assembled qualitatively, there is nothing to complain about, except that perfectionists may be somewhat annoyed by small crunches of the back cover, just squeeze the phone in your hand.
Screen
The X10 boasts a 4-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 854x480 pixels. The TFT-matrix is used, showing up to 65 thousand colors. This limitation is due to the software features of Android 1.6, which is not capable of producing more shades.
In the sun, the X10 demonstrated normal behavior - naturally, the picture is not so bright, but the data is read normally, no worse than on the Galaxy S. The credit for the X10's mirror substrate is obvious.
There is a brightness sensor, the phone can independently adjust the backlight level, if this option is selected in the menu, the brightness margin is quite enough for any purpose. The proximity sensor turns off the screen when the phone comes close to your face during a call. Thanks to the built-in accelerometer, when the phone is turned on one side, the picture on the screen changes orientation from vertical to horizontal.
Separately, we can mention the soiled front panel, which is a headache for the owners of such devices. No special coating is applied in the X10, the front panel gets smudged quickly. The display is protected from scratches by a fiberglass coating.
Platform
A Qualcomm QSD8250 platform with a 1000 MHz processor is used, 384 MB of RAM are available, 1 GB of data for internal needs, of which about 450 MB are available to the user. The smartphone comes with a 16 GB microSD card.
Menu
The use of Android 1.6 together with the original shell from Sony Ericsson makes the device more convenient to use than with “bare” Android.
At the top of the screen there is a service line, which displays the time, battery charge, signal reception level indicator. Active connections and other data are also displayed there. If you click on a line, you can find out in more detail what programs were downloaded, what messages and letters were received, or what files were received via Bluetooth.
As design elements, it is possible to use both preinstalled images and personally added files. In addition, shortcuts and folders are placed on the desktop. Sony Ericsson hasn't forgotten about widgets either, they can also be added to the desktop.
Elements that have become unnecessary are easily removed from the screen - just hold down on them for a few seconds and drag them to the bottom of the screen.
The Application Manager is activated by the Home button. It displays six programs and, in essence, is not your usual task manager. As you know, Android closes applications on its own, guided by the amount of free RAM. Not all, but many applications will not work, you can only minimize them. So the phone remembers the 6 last running applications and allows you to quickly return to them using the same button.
When the screen is locked, the display shows the date and time. To unlock the screen, you need to slide your finger along the semicircular line from left to right, or vice versa, the user can choose the method convenient for himself: the semicircular line rotates around its axis.
In order to enter the menu, you need to pull your finger on the triangle located on the bar at the bottom of the screen. The menu is presented as a list of 4x5 icons, sorted by name, kinetic scrolling works.
Phone book
The general list shows the stored contacts, both in the phone memory and in the SIM-card, as well as data from the Google account.
When creating a new contact, a lot of fields are created - these are various types of phone numbers, email addresses, means of quick communication (AIM, ICQ, Gtalk, Skype and others), residence addresses and so on (nickname, birthday, automatically added to the calendar, the note).
Contacts can be assigned to different groups, which are assigned an individual signal. By marking contacts at your own discretion, they fall into a separate category - this makes it easier to communicate with a certain circle of people.
What I especially liked was the search for Russian letters. Android devices have a list of alphabetical letters located on the right side of the screen. If you press your finger on this line and move down or up, then a letter pops up on the screen - a kind of quick search that helps in cases when the phone has several hundred, or even thousands of contacts. So, on the bulk of devices on this system, the search works only for Latin characters. In X10, the search works by the first letters of the contact name for both language layouts.
In the top line, which is above the search field, you can enter text messages-statuses for social networks.
Call log
Directly from the phone book, you can access the call log - it is highlighted in a separate tab. There the dialed numbers, received and missed calls are listed as a single list.
All telephone conversations are included in one list, but only incoming, outgoing or missed calls can be displayed. The time and date of the call is shown.
The number is dialed using a convenient virtual keyboard. Viewing the call history, you can not only make a telephone conversation with the selected subscriber, but also send him an SMS or e-mail from this list without going to another menu.

For SMS and MMS, there is a shared folder where received messages go. When sending, adding various objects to the SMS, you can automatically convert it to MMS.
Messages are grouped by addressee in the message feed. Search inside the message archive works.
By dialing the subscriber's number, the phone displays a list of suitable numbers by alternating digits. When typing text, a small margin will be displayed for characters. The longer the message, the more the space allocated for the character set increases. The device can copy, cut and paste text (and not only in the messages themselves, but you can also add it to a document or to an e-mail).
The communicator allows you to use several types of keyboards. This is a mini-QWERTY keyboard, and a full-size one, available in horizontal screen orientation.
Predictive text input is available, when word correction and auto-completion systems help you type text at a fast pace, so you don't waste time correcting mistakes. Possible word suggestions are shown on a separate line above the keyboard.
To work with e-mail, the automatic configuration of the mailbox is launched (if it is not Gmail, which connects immediately after the mail address was entered during the initial activation of the phone). It includes entering basic information (login, password). The phone perfectly understands various encodings, supports downloading attachments in familiar formats.
When composing a letter, you can also attach various files from the device's memory to it. The function of copying text and automatic mailbox checking (the interval is set manually) is also working.
The device runs two applications simultaneously - Gmail and Email. The only difference is that in the first, mail comes only from the gmail.com server, while the second application works with any mail storages.
You can create multiple email accounts, each with a different color. This is convenient because you can view mail for each mailbox separately, or display messages from all accounts into one. And in it you can already see which box it came to - you just need to remember the shade. Sorting of mail by date, subject, sender and size works.
Camera
The X10 uses a 8.1 megapixel CMOS module with autofocus and LED backlight, which replaces the flash: it either lights up from the moment it is turned on, or does not work at all. The maximum image size is 3264x2448.
The interface works in both portrait and landscape orientation - this is an interesting exception to the rule, usually only working in a horizontal position is adapted. The screen displays icons to help you set up the modes and conditions for photography. 5 small icons are displayed at the bottom - the phone shows the last captured pictures.

Geotagging is turned on, the shutter sound is adjusted (you can also turn it off), the image stabilizer, the timer is set, and other settings are changed.
By the number of megapixels X10 is a clear leader, no one has such a number of figures. However, the question is not quantity, but quality. If in the daytime the pictures are quite decent, then in cloudy weather the advantages of the camera are not so obvious. But, in general, the level of the obtained images allows us to classify the X10 as an "android phone" with the highest image quality, and there are not so many of them.

Gallery Sony Ericsson went its own way in creating a device for active and sociable people, presenting users with two shells: Timescape and Mediascape. Timescape combines tabs that combine posts from various social networks: Facebook, Vkontakte, Twitter. In addition, there is data on phone calls, SMS and MMS, e-mail, photos, and listened to songs. All panels can be merged into one - represented by one long general list.
Messages are presented in the form of translucent panels on which the name of the sender, the text of the message itself, as well as the source where the message came from is written.
The background is customizable, several theme options are available: dark blue, orange, green, blue and pink.
In general, the thing is beautiful and interesting, the main drawback is related to the not very beautiful design - if the author of the post has an avatar, then this image will be displayed stretched over the entire width of the transparent panel. The animation works quickly, there are no lags or delays - a great optimization. Mediascape, as its name suggests, brings together content related to multimedia data. So it is, here are collected photos and pictures, videos and music. Music The music tab consists of several sections: recently played, recently added, favorites, best tracks, recommended. The last 2 sections are created based on the content generated by the Play Now app. The smartphone can independently download album covers from the Internet.
In the upper right corner there is a button "Next", by clicking on it, we get into the music library itself. It also has several bookmarks: recently added, favorites, artists, albums, tracks, genres, playlists, podcasts, audiobooks.
Alas, you cannot display categories at your discretion in the main Timescape menu, which is not very convenient - you need to go deeper and look for the desired category once again. Search by media data works. In the list of tracks, it shows the album cover, the number of tracks in it.
The sound of the player is good - the device is pleasantly different from the general mass of Android devices, but at the same time it falls short of the leader of the Galaxy S segment in terms of audio. A good range of middle frequencies scares the indistinct drawing of lows, it seems that they are ghostly and unnatural, which, incidentally, can be said about high ones. This is a classic example of a player of average characteristics, but for the Android segment it's a joy - there are still not very many devices with good sound. There are no equalizer settings, which did not disappoint me especially - I prefer the standard settings. With the beloved Shure SE530, there was plenty of volume reserve, while with the bundled headphones, the owners of the phone player might not have enough power, they will have to listen to songs at the limit of the device's capabilities. The video library is organized according to a similar principle: videos are shown lined up in a row with a small preview picture of the opening frame of the film. The name and duration of the file are also indicated. The player works in both portrait and horizontal orientation, you just need to turn the phone on its side, and the picture adapts to the new position.
The screen displays a scroll bar and player control keys.
There is no support for unconverted video playback. Moreover, the X10, compressed for a portable device (), reproduced with artifacts - periodically stripes were shown on the display. This somewhat surprised me, similar files were shown without problems on Android devices of the class below, with a weaker processor. Photos For images, the same principle of data ordering is applied. There are several categories on the home page: Recently Viewed, Recently Made, Picasa Favorites. To view the rest of the content, you need to press the button at the top of the screen, which will take you to the gallery, where groups formed from folders with pictures will be shown. Due to the lack of multitouch, scaling works only with a pair of buttons appearing on the display. Pictures can be uploaded to the network on various sites, as well as assigned to a contact or sent by mail, MMS or Bluetooth. You can also arrange a slide presentation.
Browser The browser works in both horizontal and vertical screen orientations. Scaling works with the help of virtual keys that change the size of web pages, the browser interface itself is clear and convenient.
At the top is the address bar, next to it is the icon, clicking on which adds the page to bookmarks. A number of browser settings help you set the necessary parameters that are convenient when working with it.
At the bottom of the screen, an additional menu is called in the form of a pull-out panel, which allows you to open new windows (the browser supports the function of simultaneously working with several involved pages) and switch between them. You can also update the page, view bookmarks and perform some other functions (text search, disable images to reduce data consumption, copy data, view downloaded files, and others).
